Best Dorms (Other than Freshman dorms)

The housing lottery is coming up, can anyone give a breakdown of advantages and disadvantages for all Sophomore and upperclassman dorms? Especially Slater, Minden, Barbour, and 111 Brown St…

those last four are ones i would not pick as an upperclassmen

Slater- old but close
minden- conditions marginal, tiny elevator, huge lounge, private bathrooms but they’re kind of gross
barbour - new side or old side, they’re different. old side is weird, have’nt been in newer side but still not a fan
111 Brown from what I remember was okay but not sure, there are reviews on that one site for that one I think

im not reviewing all the rest but those arent the best IMO, it does come down to preference though, to some extent.

What about Caswell?

Caswell is fine if you want a double. I like Barbour a lot for a sophomore-- just about the only shot you have for a kitchen and common space.

agree with barbour over caswell

Caswell is a great location, though – and sophomore only. And while Minden does have yucky bathrooms, and strange room configurations, many of the rooms are really big. And the location is good, too.

Thanks for the info on Caswell and Barbour! Dumb question which I feel like I should know by now, but where the heck is Barbour?! I hear some people talking about it, but I can never picture where it is or where it’s relative to! But fireandrain, you are right in that Caswell has prime location–definitely a plus!

Barbour is on Charlesfield just east of Brook.

They release floor plans before the lottery for you to inspect.

It used to be possible to get them anytime of the year but I’m not sure if it’s still possible, they may have changed it. I’m not referring the same site mentioned above.

Inspect the floor plans carefully. You can spot some good deals. I know that soph year my daughter got a suite in Grad Dorms she shared with 3 friends, has 2 bathroom stalls (yes ugly outside) that came with a free big Living room (because it didn’t have outlets, they had to run extension cords in.) She furnished it quite well by collecting castoffs from Seniors at year end.

Any singles? I want something private. For my private matters.

For non-freshman? New Pembroke is a guarantee, Grad Center is probably a better bet.

Now that the lottery numbers are out, you should look around at the past years’ results on [Residential Council: Helpful Lottery Files and Links](<a href=“Residential Life | Brown University”>Residential Life | Brown University) to see what would be realistic for you. All of the things you listed in the first post, for example, require an above-average to way-above-average number.
