best essay length for college app?

What is the best essay length for college apps. I read some post and people are saying 2-3 pages. Personally I know somebody who was accepted to Yale and her essay was 1.5 pages each.

What is considered an ideal essay length.

Five hundred words. So basically a page and a half. Like they say, quality over quantity.

sounds good. i hate writing essays above 2 pages.

I've typed up a really rough draft essay that is 550 words and that is a little less than 1 page single spaced.

BTW, if you mail in your apps, is it better to double space or 1.5 space? I always think that looks better than single spaced but I'm afraid it would look longer to an adcom.

Well I mailed in all my apps and I double spaced and came out okay, though mine was only about 350 words and made about 1 1/3 pages, though at the same time, they really won't care if it's double spaced or not.

Write a 2-3 page more elaborate essay, and then trim it down to say, 1 and a half. This might help to rid of any clutter in the essay and force you to see what is and isn't necessary for the application. Quality over quantity, as they say.
