Best Ever American Rock Band

No Nirvana?

Haha, they're overrated, though I expected them to come up. I like Foo Fighters better.

Worst band ever... Bon Jovi.

yo, i like bon jovi.

jersey pride!

I can think of many many unpleasant things that I would prefer to listening to Bon Jovi or Bruce Springsteen.

red hot chili peppers for SURE!!

Nirvana .

The Band's pretty awesome.
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
Sublime.
Dispatch.
Quite a leap, I know, but still.

Radiohead
Nirvana
Pavement
Led Zeppelin
Velvet Underground

my personal favourite is CSN(and sometimes Y) but they weren't so much a band as...random people from other bands getting together to make music, occasionally.

but my vote is for Roxy Music. Even if they are British, I still vote for Roxy.

HEY!!! Not fair, in that case, I vote for U2!

@ artsavedmylife--by the way, Radiohead is British.

So since now we're doing all time favorites (not just American), here is my list:
1. U2
2. REM
3. Journey
4. Radiohead
5. Incubus
6. Aerosmith

Disappointing that at #31, Creedence Clearwater Revival is getting its first mention.

The Ramones, not so popular but a case can be made for them as the best American band.

The Eagles...definitely not the best, but not even mentioned?

Lots of British bands are getting mentions ahead of some great American bands in this thread about best American bands. There are a lot of great British bands...but they're not so good that they're better American bands than actual bona fide American bands.

@ nyjunior: I don't think the thread changed. I just think people are clueless about the difference between British and American bands.

I just mentioned a couple European bands (U2, Radiohead) because other people started mentioning European bands, and I'm a follower, not a leader, you know that by now D'yer Maker.

rem nirvana, you guys just made me vomit in my own mouth!

PIXIES!

it would definitely have to be Grateful Dead as a top choice... next to the innovative Frank Zappa of course ;)

Velvet Underground

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young=1 British, 1 Canadian

"Dispatch."

Oh. My. Gosh. Never. I hate Dispatch. I think that the title of 'Best Ever American Rock Band' should go to a band that demonstrated unique skill, creativity, and that did something DIFFERENT that changed American music. Dispatch? Yeah, right.

(Sorry. I'm a music snob.)

The Boss is great.

Bon Jovi, otoh, didn't write their hit songs (which stink, btw) and Jon has an annoying, whiny voice.

There was a former music exec who did a "March Madness" style tournament of the worst bands/singers who had achieved a certain level of success.

While there were other groups in the running like REO Speedwagon, Bon Jovi won hands down as the worst.

Btw, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Traveling Wilburys and The BoDeans are some of the best examples of American roots rock.

LesOs, just because Dispatch didn't change American music doesn't mean it can't be a candidate for a great American band. Is a great book only a few people have read not worthy of being called a great book? Anyway, I think Dispatch's beautifully crafted lyrics mixed with their blend of genres makes them special. Have you heard their words? I think they're quite lovely.

You don't have be so antagonistic about what I posted. And no one can be a "music snob"; music's too subjective. You simply overreacted to my suggestion. We're not deciding anything terribly important, here. ;)

haha, I listen for the music. I really couldn't care less who wrote the songs.

Anyhow, I add Goo Goo Dolls into the running.

For the record, I'd pick Muse if it was just favorite band.
