Best Ever American Rock Band

I'm gonna go with Lynyrd Skynard

Creators of Sweet Home Alabama and of course Free Bird (guitar hero)

and so bad ass that it took a plane crash to take them out.

whats u guys like?

The Grateful Dead, no further discussion necessary.

packerfan, Lynyrd Skynyrd is definitely awesome, but I'll have to say:

Guns N Roses. Paradise City? Welcome to the Jungle? November Rain? Quite a few amazing songs if I do say so myself.

edit: I was also gonna say Queen but realized they're british aren't they?

Red Hot Chili Peppers? Anyone who votes for them? :)

J.o.u.r.n.e.y.

Skynard isn't even the greatest Southern rock band ever (Allman Brothers).
I'm going to go with Velvet Underground.

Ugh, I don't really think Lynyrd Skynyrd is that great. Right now Im thinking The Grateful Dead is the best.

I like RHCP too. They do a nice job of spanning between genres and they manage to stay contemporary even after almost 20 years, I believe. But I don't really think they've hit that 'best' category yet. Maybe after another album or two.

van halen.

Queen definitely = British

Dude, it's totally REM. Journey comes in second.

Have to agree with huskem-----Journey is great in concert.

The Smashing Pumpkins are the highest ranked American band on my list of favorite bands and musicians.

Journey.

Don't stop believinggggggggggggggggggggggg

My tastes run the gamet from obscure 60's psychedelic rock to modern bands like Radiohead and Pearl Jam. I pretty much listen everything and have an intense passion for music. With that said, of the hundreds of bands I've listened to in my life, not one surpasses the Chilis. Their music is pure genius.

I'm not so much of a fan of Stadium Arcadium as I was of Californication and By the Way; I think that Frusciante should have been more in charge of the production like he has been in the past, but even though it doens't stand up to past Chilis albums, Stadium Arcadium is the only decent new release I've heard this year.

I'd either agree with Velvet Underground or go with the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson.

I'd say REM.

My vote goes to The Band: they are 4/5 Canadian, but their music is 100% American.

It's strange that nobody has mentioned the Doors..they are one of the best bands ever.

The Doors seem to be very hit or miss for many people. My mom despises them... she's a huge music snob. My dad, on the other hand, is a big fan. There's no "ehh" reaction to them... you either love their music or you hate it (personally, I love 'em).
