Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band
For a short period of time, Guns N Roses... though they really fell off after Appetite, and I'm not sure they're so much the best as much as most awesome.
Currently? Wilco.

here's another vote for the Jimi Hendrix Experience (and a tip of the hat to CCR, Journey, and REM)
and I agree with Kaznack, Best British blows Best American out of the water (esp. considering that the population of the UK is like 1/6 that of the US- I guess they've just got more talent per capita)

another vote for the British
it's just not even a question.

There are like 5 amazing British bands for every American one.
maybe it's the accent?

And Alex Turner is probably the best lyricist of our generation. Considering the other contenders tend to be of the "This is why I'm hot" genre.

Eric Clapton hands down

You are awesome.

Linkin Park tops the list

I mean who has a DJ, a rapper, a vocalist, guitarist, drummer... that's like all kinds of genres in one band.

Ehh... I don't know about that. His lyrics are witty and perceptive, but I don't really think that he's THE greatest lyricist.
In my opinion, that honor goes to John Darnielle (unless you mean LITERALLY in our generation... because Alex Turner is so young that he really is probably a part or our generation. But I took "greatest lyricist of our generation" to mean the greatest lyricist writing lyrics in our generation. Umm, that was probably really confusing. Whoops).
I would say Jeff Mangum, but he hasn't released anything in a while now, and I don't think that he plans to.

Decorative grating on my window
Gets a little rustier every year
I don't know how the metal gets rusty
When it never rains here
A year or so ago I worked at a liquor store
And a guy came in
Tried to kill me so I shot him in the face
I would do it again
I would do it again

-"Against Pollution" by the Mountain Goats (fronted by Darnielle)
