Best Food At bs

Which schools have terrible food? Which are very tasty? Which focus on organic or local?

Thacher. Virtually everything bought from local farms in a 50 mile radius. Superb kitchen staff and chef.

Haha, my last school didn't even have any "Lunch ladies" or a cafeteria. And Thacher has a chef? lol , that's cool.

Andover does not have very much organic or locally grown food, but most everything is at least decent.

NMH has excellent food. The majority of the produce is grown on their farm, and they send their milk from their cows to a creamery nearby to make dairy products for their dining hall.

Does anyone know about choate???

Cate and Thacher buy all their food locally and organically- I ate at both places, and both had really good food.

Swiss Chard:

I did not mention it on the Dining Hall thread - but Exeter goes organic for eggs and dairy. All baked goods and most breads are made on site, and their salad/homemade soup bar is beautifully crafted. Usually it is a variation on the days main course theme i.e. - asian ingredients available as toppings when General Tso chicken is served, south of the border style toppings when there is mexican food. Of course, there are always the main staples (carrots, cukes, tomatoes) also.

Thanks! This is a good start to figuring one small/potentially large issue out. As my D is away this summer, she loves her program, loves it! But complains about the food so genuinely that I realized that could be a true problem at bs.

When my S was younger, he thought about applying to Cardigan Mountain. He did not, mainly because of the food. Iceberg lettuce, boxed mac & cheese, and canned vanilla pudding - egads...

He went to a sports camp this summer at a state run university (UConn) and realised that our pets eat better than any student on a meal plan at that school. He ate granola bars and gatorade for a week and lost 8 lbs.

Believe me, I agree that not being able to enjoy a nice meal with your friends would (and should) be a deal breaker for any applicant - the Dining Hall thread was my first post on CC!

Some state universities have excellent food, though. UNH (University of New Hampshire comes to mind). Their dining service is award-winning and they also use mostly local and organic produce and have a huge range of meal options.

A friend of the family goes to boarding school and 60% of the food is made by students at a culinary school... The days I have visited him were Thai Salad(A light fruity asian salad... With Steak on top) and Lemon Chicken... They have some "Staple foods". You can get your lucky charms instead of a fresh baked raspberry muffin if you must...
I will try to get the name of the school... It might not be boarding

Here's a link to an article about Exeter's top chef. I haven't eaten there but he sounds like the rest of the faculty - loves his job.

Portsmouth Herald Local News: Phillips Exeter top chef earns culinary medal

At Exeter you can fill out a "recipe from home " card and if it can be made for a large group of people, they will. You might just find your favorite treat from home at lunch someday.... times 1000 people!
