If W&L is such a southern school, how is it possible that your top ranked fraternity is the NORTHERN laxer one? I'm not going to argue with your rankings because I still think ranking either fraternities or sororities only hampers potential new members and makes them less likely to end up where they fit best. But I will point out that Sigma Nu definitely has off campus houses. They had bucket these past two years. This year they have a different pretty decent party house, don't remember which though. Not sure how they manage to do it since they're one of the smaller fraternities - they must have a lot of extra money to spend.

Therein lies a clause in the W&L Social Handbook that permits oneself to be cool, if not Southern, if he playeth La Crosse.

Your emphasis with the capitalization of "NORTHERN laxer" is wrong. The phrase correctly written would be "northern LAXER."

Jeff Davis,
You don't sound intelligent or funny, mainly because you totally botched the usage of commas and misused "therein."

Jefferson Davis never played lacrosse. He just pimped it in the White House.

As far as I recall, Jefferson Davis was never President of the United States. Even if his house in Richmond was white, it was not the White House.

The Capital in Richmond was definitely white on the inside.

Dima If I'm on the Washington and Lee blog, I probably know who Jefferson Davis is. That building in Richmond is called the White House of the Confederacy. Its the real White House, and the only White House worth talking about.

Ya'll are lame

It is my understanding that in order to be in a leadership postion on campus , you must belong to a greek organization. Is this true?

@phrunk

No. It just helps, I guess, to get votes. Could hurt too depending. Don't worry about it.

And funny thread, by the way. I like the stereotypes. I would say they're all pretty much on target... mostly. I would argue the Sig Ep one. They're more of a "music frat" than a "drinking frat" (which in W&L terms means "not a frat"), and they got a pretty damned quality pledge class this year.

What's the deal with the secret societies? What is a Mink?

How's the cheerleading program at WL?

W&L Cheerleading is the best in the nation. I'm going on a full ride cheer scholarship.

^this is a lie.

I thought so as well...Not sure if he was being sarcastic or...?

what about sorority reputations?

Sororities are big and hard to stereotype...but I'll try my best.

Kappa- (Dates Big3, Sigma Chi, KA) - Southern / Blonde / Southern / Kappa or TriDelt Legacies / / Affinity for Booger Sugar

KD - More northern than Kappa / More Sloppy Drunks / Kappa Rejects / No stranger to the yayo

Theta - Athletes

Chi O - "Nice" Girls

Pi Phi -

Because there are only five, and because there are sorostitutes who barely know some of their pledge sisters, the stereotypes are not as good as the frat stereotypes. Saying that a girl is in X sorority does not pop an image into ones mind as much as saying a frat (Maybe Kappa would suggest Blonde Southern Coke Whore). Does anyone want to add?

You are painting an ugly picture of your school. Tell me about this honor you supposedly have there?

I agree cubanmom. Having met a number of students from several of these houses (male and female), incl hosting some at our home, I think there has been some unfortunate hyperbole and broad brushstroking, esp regarding drug use.

How much in these anonymous reports of drug use makes sense (how does a high performing academic student who plays a varsity sport succeed as a cokehead?).

How much stems from personal knowledge, as opposed to notoriously unreliable hearsay ("I heard from Jane Doe that Susie Roe said that Helen Moe saw Katie Poe looking like she must have . . .")?

Most importantly, how well does this type of hyperbolic stereotyping with negative traits such as promiscuity and drug use serve your fellow Generals, current and alums?

I realize that many of us (esp those close to the school) take these reports with a sense of humor and/or a grain of salt. But unfortunately, not everyone will.

I am hoping most of it is exageration, I have noticed the GPA's for the Greek houses are pretty good. Washington and Lee has a reputation as an academically challenging school, so doing coke and taking an exam the next day don't seem to mix well to me.
