I'm looking to join a fraternity during my freshman year and am pretty social and into partying. I am also accepted into the J-school at Mizzou. Which residence halls should I consider if I am looking for a coed building with either community floors with double rooms or a double suite?

That depends. Will you join the Journalism Freshman interest group ? (FIG). If so, you will be assigned a specific dorm and the other students on your floor and surrounding rooms will also be Journalism students.

There is a FIG/housing section on the Housing website.

As far as the ‘nicest’ dorms, my vote is definitely Discovery, Responsibility, Excellence, and the other one (can’t remember the name). They are right near Plaza 900 (great all you can eat dining place). Each room has it’s own bathroom - shared only with the room next door.

My son stayed in Discovery last year. While other students complained about their rooms, he and his roommates/friends loved theirs.

Another parent’s perspective: Schurz has large open lounge areas on each floor that are conducive to hanging out and meeting other students. I think that’s partly why my senior son’s core group of friends is still mostly people he met freshman year in his journalism honors FIG. According to the residential life website, that FIG is still in Schurz, which is also across the street from Plaza.

I’ve also been in Defoe Graham: smaller rooms, narrow hallways, small and out-of-the-way lounges. It felt really cramped.

I’ve heard Lathrop is a good place since it’s next to greek town, but how are the rooms and location?

If this matters to you, you might want to check to see whether Lathrop has been renovated and has central air (as opposed to window units). Schurz and Defoe Graham are the only dorms I’ve been inside.

Daughter is in Schurz and has said that although the rooms aren’t as nice as the suite style dorms, the traditional dorm is much more social as everyone hangs out in the lounge area (each floor has a lounge). She has made very close friends this way. Schurz and Hatch are close to Plaza 900 and only a short walk from the rec center. They are however far from Greektown and some of her classes, but I think that may be an issue wherever you live. She does like living with other J school kids who have some of the same classes as her, as they study together and help each other out. All in all she has been very happy with her dorm.

anyone have an opinion on the college ave. dorms?

Great discussion!! My daughter was considering NOT doing a fig or tlc, and instead opt for a potpourri. I am suggesting she do traditional style dorm too, for the social parts of it. It looks (from the website) that Gillett, Hawthorn, and Hudson are very nice and close to everything. Wolpers looks like a great location, but it has not been renovated. Any thoughts on any of these dorms? Thanks!!

I’d choose a renovated dorm, but can’t comment specifically on the three you mentioned. They are in good locations.
