What's the best grammar book out there that can help me prep for the ACT or SAT because I tend to miss the grammar occasionally.

Warriner's English Grammar and Composition. Amazing. Also, consider Writers Inc. I used Warriner's for the most part and got a 35 on English. Best of luck!

I also HIGHLY recommend Warriners and also Rules for Writers.

Many people recommend Elements of Style by Strunk and White, but I would rather stick to Warriners. If you want to take a look at Elements of Style, there is a free internet version that you can find through Google.

I like Strunk and White's Elements of Style, but you should try both books and use both. One may have something the other doesn't, and it's not a good idea to take a chance. Although, EoS is probably the most thorough grammar and style book I've seen, and it is not a lengthy read, either.

I searched online and found many different versions of "Warriner's" that are intended for different grade levels. I also found his high school handbook. Which version are you referring to?

There's one called "The Only Grammar Book You'll Ever Need". It's short, sweet, and concise.

ultimately it's gonna come down to the idioms and the extreme cases that'll get you... no prep book can really help you wiht that
expose yourself to a lot of solid literature or periodicals... otherwise for the above average scores, just buy any general app. book... u'll get what you need

At my school English teachers don't really cover grammar formally; this showed when we all took the PSAT scored worst on the writing section. I agree that there are a lot of idiom cases, but a guide would still be helpful.

The Elements of Style contains a list of commonly made mistakes--not really idioms, but a few of them have helped me on the ACT. It's worth looking over in my opinion.
