Best High Schools in San Diego Area?

Some of you seem to know SD pretty well. Does anyone have an opinion about which SD area high school they would have attended if they'd had the choice? I'd really appreciate some advice. I have one daughter who will be attending UCSD this fall and another daughter who will be starting ninth grade. I'm looking into the area around La Jolla and north, but I'm open to wherever people recommend. Thanks.

Newsweek also did a study a few years back, but their criteria may be different from what the average high school student wants (as opposed to what their parents want). I know some schools offer the chance to shadow a current student for the day (my high school did this for all interested 8th-graders), maybe you should make up a list and check them out?

News Release - NEWSWEEK Ranks Fourteen San Diego High Schools Among Best in U.S. :: San Diego City Schools

i would think that torrey pines HS and la jolla HS are top-performing schools...I remember participating in a yearly math contest when I was in high school, and those schools consistently ranked among the top 10 schools in California. namely, torrey pines HS looked really good

i heard tory pines is a good school, only been to san diego a couple times and i remember passing a school, maybe it was a high school, hear the sd zoo, and there's also san pascal high? don't think i spelled it right but its not directly in san diego, but its like near the wild animal park?

For public high schools Torrey Pines HS has the top stats - largely because it's in the wealthiest area (Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Del Mar, Solana Beach) although a new HS was just opened in that district. This area is fairly near La Jolla and UCSD.

Home Page-San Dieguito Union High School District

I answered this question in the "UCSD over where?" thread

the bishop's school, it's a private school in la jolla. it is the best school in san diego county. the tuition is more than ucsd's though

High Tech High and San Diego School of Performing Arts

Thanks so much for the input. I checked into the California Department of Education website where they rank Academic Performance Index (API) for every school. The high schools in the Poway Unified District looked pretty good (Mt. Carmel, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, and Westview). Does anyone have any opinions about any of these schools? I'm trying to research this from 800 miles away, and I can't tell if Poway is a cool small town or kind of just out in the sticks. I would so appreciate some ideas on this. Thanks.

high tech high is not top, and that news week list is terrible.

public only:

torrey pines high school
poway high school
la jolla high school
university city high school
scripps ranch high school

Poway Unified is located inland has excellent rep. for turning out top students. These schools are located about 25minutes from the beach by car.

how come nobody's mentioning the preuss school?
The Preuss School UCSD

i don't know if your daughter qualifies or how you get in or anything. i just know it's really good.

you have to be the 1st in your family to attend college to be eligible for the preuss school ... as well as be severely financially disadvantaged.

so if the same family's sending a daughter to UCSD this fall and are re-locating to san diego, likely that they don't meet the requirements for the charter school.

Several of the high schools north of La Jolla are good as well. Carlsbad High School, La Costa Canyon High School, El Camino High School in Oceanside. They are all very good but they're at the north end of the county, a 30 minute drive to La Jolla.

yeah i go to carlsbad high school! yeah we pretty much own everyone else at everything ever invented in the history of forever.

by the way, el camino sucks

...because it sucks and they fix grades. Show investigation pending.

Anthony, EC does not suck. I went there and now I'm at UCSD on scholarship. Can you say the same? If so, congrats, if not, then lay off.

I'm curious to know how you guys feel about the other kids at your school. I know this is asking for a pretty subjective answer. But you know how some schools seem to have a more open, tolerant feel about them, and other schools seem like maybe the kids are a bit more narrow and judgmental? I know that it's hard to really generalized about an entire school, but maybe you could give your impressions about how you feel kids treat other kids at your school.

i also went to EC, except the EC i'm speaking of is about 600 miles north of yours, sterling =]

hey...i'm going to UCSD as well. however, i didn't fill out a FASFA so i didn't get a scholarship.

plus i was only saying EC sucks because we own them at football and synchronized swimming.
