I noticed UCSD really cracked down on admissions this year to the point 3.95 weighted and 2030+ were getting rejected left and right. I think competition has become really fierce but on top of that i think SD is making a ploy to become a top 30/tier 1 school. I think in a few years it might accomplish that..anyone else think so?

Uh, it says it already is the 8th best public school.

I personally think SD is overrated and won't continue to climb up the ranking ladder. A big part of SD's current rank is due the millions of research dollars pouring in. SD doesn't have the resources, the students, or the environment to become a top tier school, in my opinion. Many administrators say that SD is great, and will continue to improve. I agree that UCSD has had a meteoric rise in the rankings - 50 years is a very short timespan in terms of universities. However, I seriously doubt SD will be a top tier school in our lifetime. I could be way off though. The future is hard to predict.

yeah, i think so too. has the average gpa and sat score for acceptances been released yet? (sorry if it's in another thread)

I think UCSD is a top-tier school already, you have to put things in perspective...being a top 10 public university IMO counts as "top-tier" already. I think it's definitely possible for us to reach the top 30 but it'll take several years before that happens.

Well, when you think of rising in ranks, you need to think about which ones you can kick off. Right now, by name sake alone, UCSD outshines, at least to a West Coaster like me, 5 schools only. Rising further would mean that it would have to develop in things that it doesn't have right now. UCSD has pretty much plateaued in terms of the sciences, so it has to focus on the arts and other such programs. The school clearly has the ability to rise even more given it's unbalanced nature, but whether or not the funds are there to do so, or whether the school itself is willing to do so, remain uncertain.

No sports = no dramatic rise in rankings in a while
