As an incoming transfer... I'm required to live on campus. I know there are similar posts, but does anyone have an opinion as to which building is the best to live in? Or do I not have a choice? Will I be living in the new building?

You absolutely have a choice. The two main dorms are Piano Row, an ex-hotel which uses suite-style living, having 6 people per a dorm room (3 bedrooms for 2 people each and a common room with some space for a TV and kitchenette). You also get your own bathroom and all the cleaning responsibilities. The idea is that it’s more luxurious, requires more responsibilities, but there’s a tendency among people to stay in their room and not socialize.

The other dorm room is the Little Building, which has more of a classic college setup, 1 room, two beds, a couple bathrooms on each floor, and this forces people to socialize.

Overall, it depends on what type of person you are. If you have a tendency to loaf when put in front of a computer or TV, I say go Little Building. But if you’re able to put down the remote and get out and socialize, Piano Row is nicer.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the LB. Good for meeting people, and a real community feel. I guess it depends on how attached you are to having your own bathroom and space.

I’ve also heard from many of my friends who are in college that corridor style dorms are the best for making friends at a new school…but again, it depends on if you’re willing to make the sacrifice.

I just asked my daughter this question (her younger sister will be applying for next year)…she just finished her sophomore year and lived in Piano Row for both years. She did however spend a fair amount of time in LB as she had friends there. She said she would definitely recommend PR. She felt LB was “too old and run down.” Just her opinion. She will be living off campus next year.
