Dorms

Does anyone have suggestions for which dorms are best for freshmen? thanks.

Hey, i think it really depends what you're looking for. I hear the towers are the crazy, loud, party dorms. The ones in the quad are a good location and stuff. I dont think i want to be in an all freshman dorm. I'm not sure yet. I am thinking the towers.

I'm a current freshman. I personally don't think that Towers are that much more social. Some people's floors are really close, and some aren't - it all just depends. The quads can also provide a great community atmosphere - especially the freshman housing, they offer a lot of specialty programs and students become really close in those dorms. I have friends that did the first year program and they loved it. I chose Emerson, which is probably considered one of the least social dorms. I like it because of the private bathrooms and easy access to Park (where most of my classes are). Also, despite it's reputation, I am friends with quite a few people in my dorm - and I would say that there is always a party going on in Emerson on weekends. However, it does cost a little bit more. Terraces are also nice because they are close to the two best dining halls, AND some of them provide specialty housing options that also build community - if that's what you're looking for.

If you have more questions about housing feel free to ask! :)

Do freshman have a choice between any dorm? Also, is it possible for freshman to get a single? If not, I'm probably leaning toward Emerson. The private bathrooms are intriguing...

When you say have a choice, the choice is in the area. Like you can say you want Quads or Terraces or Towers, but you don't get to choose the particular building you want...they just place you. You can request to have a single, but many singles are claimed by sophomores already. However, you can definitely put that down for a preference. You will see all the options when they send you the information.

Does anyone have more info on the first year housing? I cant decide whether to put that as my first choice or the towers. any suggestions? thank you.

I'd have to echo what's already been seen, and add that most people i know in towers know pretty much everyone on their floor. -- i think it has more to do with being farther away from the ground with a group of people close together.
And, Emerson is not social at all. Everyone has their door shut and its a completely different atmosphere. but, you really can't beat the private bathroom.
One of the downsides to the first-year program is that you could be put in boothroyd which is in the middle of the woods and is pretty bad (people are close socially there too) -- so basically it depends on what you want
