My son wants to major in illustration with the goal of becoming a commercial artist. He has no fine art aspirations and is looking for a program that is more technical than conceptual. He's not interested in majoring in animation or cartooning or anything that specific. Drawing is his thing, and he likes the idea that illustration can be a broad platform from which to jump in a lot of different directions. His portfolio was recently pre-approved at SVA and SAIC, and his preliminary list also includes MICA, RISD, Art Center, Pratt, and Ringling. From what we can tell, these are among the strongest illustration programs in the country, but we wanted to solicit advice from folks who may have been through this process recently and know more than we do Thanks.

spoonyj, what kind of information are you seeking? My daughter is a senior Illustration student at Ringling so if you have questions, feel free to PM me. Hopefully others with experience at various schools will chime in as well. Meanwhile, have him look at student work, visit if possible, attend NPD, etc. and keep up his grades so he can possibly receive scholarships! Good luck to him!
