Hey, I was just looking around through collegeboard and princeton review doing my own research, but this looks like a great place to get some much needed additional help.

I decided to go to community college for my first year until I figured out what I really watned to do for a major, and I really want to be a professional photographer for either a large newspaper or magazine.

Now I don’t want to corner myself with a major such as photography or photojournalism, so I thought going with print journalism would be the correct path to take.

Any advice for schools to go to? The only area I really don’t want to live on is the West Coast. I will even go to Carleton University (Ottawa) if the circumstances are right though.

What I really want are:

Great internships.

Study abroad program.

To go to a school that has a top notch journalism program.

Not a neccesity, but a school that may let me get a minor or double major in photojournalism or photography? Because esentially, I don’t want to write forever, I’d rather be taking the pictures.

The best possible journalism school that I can get into.

Right now I really have my eye on Northwestern but I’d love more advice.

Take a hard look at either Syracuse University Schools of Communication and Art. Communication is very strong on journalism and Art school is strong on photography.

Rochester Institute of Technology is one of the best schools for anything in photography in the US. They also have numerous courses in photojournalism.

Syracuse is best if your emphasis is newswriting. RIT is best if your emphasis is photojournalism. RIT also has a School of Printing and a Dept of Professional and Technical Communication (which offers a course in newswriting). At RIT you could major in Photojournalism, minor in Printing, and have a Liberal Arts concentration in Professional and Tech Communication.

Actually, Collegehelp, I have to disagree with you. While RIT is obviously excellent for photography, don't dismiss Syracuse. Syracuse has an EXCELLENT photojournalism program within its Newhouse School of Communications. The nice thing about the SU photojournalism program is that it exposes you to a well-rounded education in all aspects of journalism, from one of the top journalism schools in the country. The other journalism school I would recommend for photojournalism is Boston University. NYU has a very interesting and exciting imaging and photography program --- not photojournalism, per se, but might be worth a look to see if it is of interest.

U of Missouri is great for journalism, but does not have a photojournalism concentration, something the original poster is specifically looking for.
