Ideal job would be to work at Tesla

Is he in college now?

Have you considered U Wyoming? It’s the right size, has all the outdoor opportunities, offers AFROTC, and he would qualify for merit aid.

I will be the first to admit that I know little to nothing about engineering but it seems to offer a lot of what your son is looking for and from what I have learned on these forums Wyoming has put a lot of money into the university.

I agree with Wyoming and would add Colorado School of Mines, if you can afford it. Montana State is a tad large but would also be worth a look.
