Best musical theatre opportunities at schools not offering a MT major

My DD loves MT, and has been performing in regional and community theatre since she was very young. She will be a junior this year, and we are starting to think about colleges. She is not interested in majoring in MT, but would love to still participate while in college. I'm guessing it would be best for her to find a college that doesn't have a MT major, so that "regular" students would routinely be cast in shows.

Does anyone have suggestion of colleges that produce good MT but do not have a MT major? Thanks!

There are a lot of colleges that have plenty of musicals that students can be in that are run through student run organizations. But it is too hard to recommend these when choosing a BA college requires choosing one in the ballpark of one’s academic qualifications. For example, Brown and Yale have great extracurricular musical theater opportunities, but no sense recommending them to someone who isn’t in the ballpark academically to get in. Skidmore has a student run musical group. So does Indiana. I know there are student run musicals at Tufts too. I was at Stanford recently and saw that they were putting on a student run production of Sweeney Todd. The list would get very long and so if you could narrow selection criteria/range, it would help. But also as you investigate colleges, look up the student clubs and organizations and see what is available.

There’s also a student run musical theater group at Penn State that does two mainstages a year, two childrens’ shows, and one or two cabaret type events.

We have an MT minor here at USC but no major. It’s 27 units and auditioned, but honestly, I don’t think the audition is really that tough.

SC does a mainstage musical in the spring through the School of Theatre, and anyone at USC can audition for that, and then there are a few other student-produced shows. I know last year, 25th Annual, Tommy, A Little Night Music, and Edges were produced by students. An all-female cabaret and The Drowsy Chaperone have been announced for the upcoming school year (to be produced by MTR, Musical Theatre Repertory), in addition to the spring SOT musical, City of Angels. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone else decides to do another musical, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if that’s it, if that makes any sense at all.

As soozievt says it’s tough to make specific suggestions without knowing about academic qualifications, but Northwestern University does a LOT of musicals every year that all students can (and do) audition for. They also have a number of very strong a cappella groups if that’s of interest to your D.

Im putting this in every thread b/c i need feedback…my s was just offered a spot in BFA/MT program at Montclair State Univ in NJ…THIS YEAR…saving a whole year (transfer) and auditions…what would you do??
