Best neighborhood to live?

Hey everyone! Me and my several friends are looking for places to live next year. I'm just wondering which are the best areas where they are:
(a) close to campus, but want to avoid the hustle and bustle of campus.
(b) quiet and good for studying.
(c) ABSOLUTELY NO PARTYING!
(d) Near the 80 bus route or any kind of transportation
(e) Safe at night, especially on the weekends.

I'm currently living in an apartment on University Ave, and I hate it! There are way too many parties going on!!

Any suggestions would be helpful! I know we are a little bit picky but hey, I just want to make sure I'll have the best college experience.

The Vilas-Monroe Street area is nice and usually quiet except on home football days and when the zoo animals are acting up. Otherwise eastside in Jenifer-Speight area is nice and usually quiet but a longer bus ride. There always be a few parties in any neighborhood on weekends.

What about Old University Ave.?

He said he lived on University–most likely old U now.

The Spring St area near Union South. Use the online search for off campus housing- pick your areas and other factors.

Barrons:

Old University is waaaay down by Octopus Carwash (2200 block) and where many Pharm.D. and med students choose to live. It is probably not where the OP lives now - I’m guessing he may live at or near 777 University (Lucky), in the heart of party central. It’s almost 1.5 miles from 777 University to 2302 University.

Most would just say they live at the Lucky then. Not much housing along University there except Lucky and Embassy. And I know the distances. Not many newbies are going to call it Old University. It is now just University Ave. Other is Campus Drive until is swtiches back near UW Hospitals.

I was surprised the term Old University was in use a few years ago- we never used it eons ago.

OP- living with several people is bound to be a lot noisier than living alone or having just one roommate. You may want to rethink the numbers. If it is just you +/- another friend you can wait several months before apartment hunting. Are you sure only one month into the school year you will want to live with these people next year? Will everyone stay quiet? Don’t rush into signing a lease you may regret.

No doubt the closer to campus you are, the more often the ‘zoo animals’ are let out occasionally, as barrons so aptly puts it. Part of the deal.

My D lived two years in different apartments in the ‘Old U’ area, one on University not quite to the Octopus car wash, then one just off University, overlooking Campus Drive. I kept giving her a bad time about the John Mellencamp song ‘…interstate running through her front yard…’ but it was a funky apartment in a neat area. And it’s right on the bus route, within walking distance to the classes on the west side of campus near Camp Randall.

Actually, there appear to be plenty of cool neighborhoods to live. The Jenny & Willy Street areas, while not close to campus, looked every bit like the half-rundown hippie-ish hovels we treasured 35 years ago at a different Big 10 campus. And the bus seems to run everywhere.

I took the ‘zoo animals’ reference to mean the actual zoo animals at the Vilas Zoo. Maybe the double entendre was lost on me.

I live in Madison (born here) and we still refer to that certain portion as ‘Old University’.
