Best off-campus housing options

Hi, my daughter started UGA a couple of weeks ago. She likes it a great deal EXCEPT for the housing which quite frankly is very bad. In most dorms that I have seen, the rooms are tiny and the bathrooms are well, barely acceptable. For her sophomore year we are considering moving her off-campus in either an rental apartment or rental house or even purchasing a house. I don’t know this area too well. Can anyone suggest where the best place to look is when considering [1] time to get to class, [2] crime/safety and [3] convenience? What is the traveling options to and from? I’d prefer that she didn’t have a car as it just opens up a whole new set of problems.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

My D is a freshman as well. Although we are encouraging her to stay on campus next year, I’ve looked at a few places online. I have another kid at Bama and he lives in an apartment geared to students- individual leases, shuttles to campus, fully furnished, etc. Looking at Athens, it appears they have similar type apartments (like The Connection at Athens and others). The student focused apartments are usually less expensive than living in a dorm, but you do have to lease them for 12 months. If she would like to stay on campus, have her look at the dorms on the Myers Quad (like Rutherford) and those that are in the East Campus Village (which are similar to aparments).

Both my students moved off campus sophomore year. Most kids do. There is an abundance of student apartments in Athens.

Mine lived at towne club and were happy there.
