Best Outerwear recommendations for Maine weather

My d got into Bates ED, and we have been looking at winter coats and boots. We have had a very mild winter in the NY metro area. Can anyone recommend brands of Outerwear that will hold up to 4 years of Maine winters?

LL Bean, of course!

Of course!

Sundance carries a nice variety of fun, useful boots. If you can pick up a pair on sale, so much the better.

Mindy dear, Bean’s is a must for authentic “Main-ah” outah-wear. Boots are another story. Yes, your D could complete the outdoor ensemble with the classic Bean boot. However, should you want comfort and NE versatility, I’d go with Timberland and select something that is comfortable and works the best. Timberland is long lasting as well and can provide some variation beyond the classic Bean boot. And to support any hiking interests, Merrell makes the best boot, a number of different varieties, waterproofed, insulated deep into the minus numbers, great support, aggressive tread, if you want to do some serious hiking and not regret it at the end of the day. All are NE born companies who do a lot for sustainability and for the environment / community. Personally, I got my first pair of Timberland handsewns at the Stratham factory back in 1975, along with a pair of Timberland Chukka boots, each under $20. During the 90’s, I used to road test Merrell boots, often three models going at once for varying periods of time - those were great shoes for all sorts of hiking, and the tread ruled on the rocks! I got to keep them once the factory inspected them - they would notch a small hole 3/8" x 3/8 inch deep on the side of the heel facing out, and mail them back to me.
Good luck in Lewiston! Mr. VC

Thank you Mr VC and Peonies. Its hard to get her away from fashion so she ordered a North Face, although she has to return because it is too big. I will look into Timberland now.

All the other girls will be in LLBean- I still am…Those midnight visits to the mother ship…

Plenty of the girls at Bates wear Northface coats. Boots, OTOH, are strictly LLBean, and not just at Bates but everywhere now. All the rage.

LL Bean boots are totally hip and partially manufactured in Lewiston, so you can support the local economy and be fashionable too!

Thanks everyone, great advice!

And make sure to get some wool socks to go inside those Bean boots! Even though our students may not mind cotton ones, wool socks are cozier.
