Best Path for Business

Hi I've been accepted to the class of 2018 (Weinberg) and am leaning towards a major in biology. However, I'm also thinking about a career in business and I know that NU doesn't have an undergraduate business major. What would be the best major/minor setup to go into if I chose to do business? Thanks

Math, econ, statistics, computer science, business institutions minor, Kellogg certificate program for undergraduates.

Mix and match to your heart’s desire.

^ this. Also if you are interested in starting/knowing how to actually run a business, look at getting involved in the NUvention series.

Exactly what PieceofToast said, but I’d also add that there are clubs to join that deal with business, and there’s a residential college for business (Ayers CCI), so if you want to live up north, it’d be a good plan to live there.

Would an Econ major and a math minor be the best option for getting into consulting/hedge-fund stuff?

For a Weinberg student going into business (there are many), Econ is probably the most common major. Many people double major in math/econ. MMSS is very highly regarded in the business world, but would be very tough to do with a biology major. I would suggest looking into the Kellogg Certificate program for undergraduates (http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/certificate.aspx</a>), which in my opinion is the best (and most highly sought after by employers) preparation for many business-related jobs.

I think a bio/econ major or a bio major and Kellogg certificate would be a great (and relatively rare) combination that you would position you well for strategy positions at biotech/pharma firms, healthcare consulting firms, and healthcare-focused investment firms.

Are the certificates technically “degrees” and are they something you focus on solely or something you pair with a traditional major? Thanks for your responses btw.

The Kellogg certificates are not degrees - to receive a Kellogg certificate, you must have an undergraduate major at Northwestern. Any major is eligible to apply for the certificates, as long as you complete the prerequisite courses. Bio major + Kellogg certificate I think would be great.

Thanks this helps a lot.
