I got my sheets at wal mart and my comforter at target. The one thing I’d recommend is buying sheets with a decent thread count because people (girls) will notice. I actually had a friend ask me to change my cheap sheets, like $10 sheets, to the relatively expensive ones, like $35 sheets, because they were softer and more comfortable. Plus, you’re going to be sleeping on these sheets for the next four years, so why skimp out on comfort.

how much thread count is good enough?

I never pay attention to those kind of things so I have no idea how high a thread count needs to be to be decent. lol.

I actually found a whole bed in a bag set with a nice pattern from Bed Bath & Beyond, and its $60. my mom said i could buy it. it’s 200 thread count. is that too low? is it not worth it?

fwiw, my dad manages a few hotels and they all use at least 300 thread count sheets. if i were you, i’d just buy some 300-400 thread count sheets at wal mart for like 30-40. surprisingly, wal mart has a decent collection of colors and patterns.

I found my own separately at the stores mentioned above

I’m pretty sure colleges sell their own sets too but those are probably very expensive.

PB Teen has patterned XL sheets. Yes, typically PB Teen can be pricey; however, often they put stuff on sale. Their stuff is WAY cute, too, IMHO.

My D is very fussy about her bed at college. She got her sheets at Bed Bath and Beyond - they were the big splurge, she got the jersey sheets and loves them. She purchased her comforter and pillow sham as a set at K-Mart; she said she receives compliments on it all the time (and she attends a very upscale school). She worked at Macy’s last year and purchased a very plush blanket/throw and a wonderful pillow using her employee discount. She got an inexpensive mattress topper at Target.

She looked online at the various stores and end up ordering her K-Mart comforter online because the size she needed wasn’t available at our K-Mart locally.

My school actually sent a mailer that had information about buying from http://www.rhl.org.
From what I’ve seen, they have some cool designs and seem to not be completely atrocious as far as pricing (there’s a complete kit including two sheet sets, comforter, pillows, blanket, towels (bath, hand and washcloth) hamper and other accessories for $200 with free shipping). In my opinion, that’s actually REALLY cheap for all that you get, and there’s smaller packs of things that can come cheaper, of course.

Other than that, I am also a firm believer in eBay, Amazon and Google Shopper as far as the internet goes… I haven’t paid full price for an item like bedding in quite some time!

Kohls has GREAT sales when they have sales, but other than that, I wouldn’t generally recommend them.

since it looks like you have the internet in california, you can check there for lower prices =P

Some of the best deals are probably in the discount rack at local stores - sometimes internet clearance but (and this is because my sensitive skin family members are all picky about bedding quality) it is difficult to tell just from thread count alone how sheets will feel. We bought a nice bedding set from Bed Bath and Beyond using 20% off coupon that they send all the time once you sign up (you can also get online discount codes as well) and those sheets were only 250 thread count but felt fine - we bought a second set of sheets 400 thread count on sale online from BB&B which feel better but most people would find the difference negligible.

If you think your best bet in saving money is to shop online I would sample some brand name products in the store and then look for sale items from the same manufacturer so you know what their product feels like. As far as sizing goes - unless the twin sheets are really cheap the twin will probably fit the twinXL because the length difference is only 4 inches and sheets made to fit deep pillow top mattresses (which you will not be finding in your dorm room) will stretch the extra length with some of the fabric originally intended to cover mattress depth. For that same reason, the fitted sheet is the only serious fit issue - and even there, if the quality is good there shouldn’t be a problem.

I also found down pillows at Costco very reasonably priced (two pillows for $39). BB&B also had memory foam mattress toppers in twinXL for $99 before coupon - which matched the best price I found at costco 3 months ago.
