Best prep in the next 18 days for Math II? HELP PLEASE!

Hi, I am going to take the Math II subject test on Jan 28.

I am currently all over the place with prep, doign practice from Meylani, Barron's, PR, Sparknotes, etc.

In Barrons, I miss about 10 questions due to time, and score around a 600.

Although some might say that a 600 is good enough score to get a 750+ in the real thing, it still hurts my confidence and I want do better on these tests to ensure a good score on the real thing.

What is the best prep I can do in the next 18 days for this test? And what is a strategy that I can use in order to finish all the questions in practice tests? What are your strategies while pacing?

I really need a good regimen to get the most out of the next 2.5 weeks. I am aiming for an 800 (hopefully it's doable).

Again, I really need help, an organized prep routine would help. Please list any resources that helped you score well on the test.

Thank you!

Bumppp pleasee

you can actually get an official guide that includes Math II practice tests. Try Mcgraw Hills book if you haven’t tried it yet.

Pacing Strategy:
45 seconds per question. Use POE, and use the 3 Step-Skipping Technique. Properly used, you should have seen all questions in about 35-40 minutes (most likely with 4-5 questions unanswered). Spend about 10 minutes to solve these questions, and use the rest to check your work.

3 Step Skipping Strategy

 1. Do all the questions you immediately know the answers first
 2. Then Do all the questions you know exactly how to find the answers
 3. Then do the other questions in order of how easy they seem to you (the 4-5 or more you’ve left blank after 35-40 minutes)

If you’re aiming for an 800 and need pacing practices. Try taking a practice test with 50, 45, and 40 minutes. You’ll find you make more errors at first, but they will be gone once you’re used to the amount of time. You’ll also find yourself a much faster math calculator.

Just what I did for my 800 Math II.

Lots of practice. You can stop with the Barron’s because the questions are truly too much to handle. Try to see if you can get your hands on some more authentic practice questions.

A couple coaching/tutoring sessions may not hurt either.

Oh okay, i see what you guys are saying. I will try that and let you know how it plays out. Thank you so much!

Guys I dont have much time left, I really need to do well on this and the pacing strategy is not doing any good for me. Is there any other strategy to offer? I am trying hard but its tough.

Are you getting questions wrong because you don’t know how to do them, as opposed to a time limit? If so, note down the types of questions you keep getting wrong (e.g. conics, 3-D coordinate system, etc.) and then read up on those topics. Although the Barron’s tests are too unrealistic, their explanations of topics are great.

What problems do you have with pacing? Making easy errors? Too much pressure? Don’t know your materials?

If you are really having problems with time, try taking practice exams in 45-50 minutes. It should force you to increase your speed and adapt to it.

Depends what type of questions you are having trouble with also.

Certain types of questions on the SAT II can be answered in less than 30 seconds. The hardest ones shouldn’t take more than 3 minutes to answer.

PM for more info.

Thank you for the responses everyone!

@xquiksilverx: I pretty much know all of the material (excluding probability), but my problem if that I can’t think of the right way to do a problem in time. Like, when I am relaxed and take my time, I can do practically all of the problems. When I am timed, pressure and nervousness all shoot down at me. I know the material but when I am timed, I easily forget the applications and concepts. But yes, I will try going through the Barrons book, thank you.

@rkanan Like I explain to xquiksilverx, I have a big problem with pressure. I may make the occasional ‘careless mistake’, but for the most part, it is the time limit that hits me. I know the material enough to do the test well untimed (I do that with Rusen Meylani tests and yield scores of 700+). I know the material but when I am timed, I easily forget the applications and concepts. I will definitely take your advice and do the test in 45-50 minutes, thank you.

@ACTsecrets: Well if each problem shouldn’t take that much time, then hopefully I’ll start to do better with the hardest ones. I will go through my most recent tests and either list the concepts I have most difficulty with or PM you. Thank you very much for the offer, and you will be hearing from me in the future!

My overall question is how can I do better under time conditions when the pressure is one me? And can anyone offer any probability help specifically for the MATH II? It is my worst Math concept, as I almost always get the problem wrong. I could never apply the right method when I read the question.

I find that the only way to ease the pressure when given a certain amount of time is to practice the same task over less amount of time. So, good luck :)
