As I prepare to choose my courses for the fall semester, I was wondering if any of you that or attending or have graduated from Boston College have any recommendations for professors and courses in the social sciences (specifically Political Science, History, Economics). I have read through some of the PEPs that the UGBC has set up, but I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions…

Thanks for the help in advance!

Professor Jacobs is an amazing lecturer. He lectured on the War in Vietnam during the first semester and foreign policy during the second. My roommates absolutely loved him and I wanted to take his courses, but they just didn’t fit into my schedule.

As for economics, take Professor Peterson. He is knowledgeable on the subject matter and his grading policy doesn’t hurt your grade either. Another option is Professor Tresch. He is known for being the highest paid professor at BC. His PEPs may not be that great; however, I think it’s because he demands a lot out of his students. He tests you on both the definitions of terms as well as the application of terms. His questions may not always have a clear cut answer, but if you read his textbook and study for the tests, you should be fine, considering a large number of students do not attend his lectures.

Alright, for economics, Professor Tresch is very knowledgeable, but I think it mostly depends on if you’re okay with taking a large lecture class. His class is about 300 with a once a week smaller discussion group. Other econ classes are smaller. Consider your learning style. Also, midterm is 40%, final is 60% with weekly problem sets for extra credit (if you do the majority of them and do well on them, he says he’ll boost your grade 1/3 of a letter grade, i.e. B- to B)

Thanks for the replies. Professor Peterson has very strong PEPs. However, it looks like his Micro course is already closed for the Fall semester. Anybody have an opinion about Professor Quinn?

How about Political Science? Any recommendations?

I’m not sure Petersen’s class is full. BC is probably holding spots for incoming freshmen for that class.
