Im trying to plan out my schedule for next year and was wondering if anyone has any experience with decent professors in introductory Economics, Bio, Psychology/sociology/philosophy and maybe a writing class they enjoyed.

I took EC101 (intro to microecon) with Prof Idson and I liked him. He told the same jokes over and over again, but it wasn’t a bad class to sit through.

To tell you the truth, IMO, that’s really not the best way to pick a professor–some professors work better for different students, because everyone LEARNS differently. Plus, in many cases it’s not feasible, because everyone’s schedule is unique and you may not have an opening.

go through the studentlink registration & look up each professor for a class on ratemyprofessors.com. my personally, i loved shim for psychology (took 2 classes with him for fun!) because he makes everything so simple and relates every concept to a story about his family or a patient in a funny way. i also personally enjoyed medical ethics (cas ph 251); however they are rotating professors that teach this course, and not everyone is like me (enjoying medicine i mean). bio 107 is rotating professors (i think 3-4 per semester) so there’s really no choice in that.

Econ - Watson
Psych - Shim and Ely
Writing - Kinraide

This is based on both personal experience and general hearsay. Watson in particular is lauded by everyone I know who’s taken Econ. In terms of Psych, most people will recommend Shim up down and sideways, but I’ve known some people who prefer Ely, who is also quite good. I had Kinraide for WR150 and she was really great–laid back, understanding, and not a complete nitpicker like a lot of WR teachers seem to be.

In general, though, ratemyprofessors.com is definitely a valuable resource. If you don’t know anyone whom you can ask about certain professors, that website is the place to go.

econ watson. Idson is an a -hole.
