Best Professors at UT

Know any? I paid for pickaprof, but that only tells you who's good if you know of them. I don't want to miss any. :)

I am very interested in who is good in the finance and economics departments if anyone has any experience.

Depends on what type of professor you’re interest in. Science? Business?

Pickaprof is iffy for me - usually only the extremes rate/post their reviews. I had a professor who’s review was atrocious and all said that he was hard. My friends and I barely studied and we got an A in his class.

Professor Michael Brandl is great- I have him for my Undergraduate Signature Course, “Your Global Money” (which I would recommend as your UGS course - it’s a great way to learn about money and finances without all the complicated economics stuff). Brandl teaches other courses in the McCombs Business School (I don’t know which ones, since I’m in Liberal Arts), but at least for this class he is definitely interested in his subject, always willing to answer questions and help when needed, I’d highly suggest taking a class with him no matter which one it is.

Professor Knapp is my teacher for my UGS class. He’s in the geography department and really loves South America, especially Ecuador. I would recommend taking one of his classes as an elective if you had to pick something random to take.

on the flip side, I would strongly recommend that you do NOT EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER take Professor C. Buckley’s UGS course about HIV/AIDS and the cultural spread. That class is an absolute nightmare. She requires you to read 4 books at break-neck speeds as well as do hours of service towards AIDS organizations. Just not worth it.

for a RHE 309K, I would highly recommend Andrew Friedenthal’s course about Rhetoric in the scope of comics. It sounds like a blow-off class, but it actually teaches you a lot about a spectrum of literature that is often forgotten. He’s very interested in what he’s doing, and I like him a lot as a teacher.

JuanEatsPandas, for RHE 309K is Friedenthal a good professor in terms of course load and tests? I don’t want a really hard professor for this class because it’s not related to my major and I have really hard classes next semester so I’m hoping to balance it out by taking fairly easy classes and professors. Is it easy to get an A in his class or do the TAs make it hard to get an A on the tests/essays?

Thanks guys. I’ll add one for anyone interested: Lawrence Speck for Architecture 308. Amazing prof - I was wondering if it was just me who felt that way so I scrolled down 5 pages of reviews at pickaprof: the only things people complained about was the workload (which isn’t really that bad imo) and the ultra-comfortable chairs. XD I have a feeling Speck will end up being the best professor I’ll get all these 4 years.

sorry that I haven’t gotten on in a while, but I’ll still answer the question

It’s by no means an easy class. I’d say that nearly everyone in the class ranges from a C to a B+ with few A’s (maybe 1 or 2). That being said, I don’t believe that anyone has a grade lower than a C. The class itself is only made up of about 25 people, so there are no TAs and Andrew grades everything himself. He’s a really detailed grader, citing specific ways in which you can improve, and he also seems to legitimately care about his students succeeding in the class.

If you ever end up taking Human Sexuality, take it with Nancy Daley. She’s super legit, funny, sweet, and LOVES teaching her class. She’s got a sort of sarcastic sense of humor but she smiles a lot and people love her class so much, that some of their friends even come just to sit in, it’s that interesting and entertaining! She’s really candid, and you can pretty much say whatever in that class and have nothing to be ashamed of (as long as it’s not bigoted or extremely rude/inappropriate). I gave her a huge hug at the end of the semester, that’s how amazing she is :)

George Forgie for US History. I was an engineering major, but his class was about my favorite out of all four years. You have to love history, though, to like him! He assigned a BUNCH of long books, but they were all excellent. It was a huge lecture class, but he was such a good story-teller that I looked forward to going every time.

Pierson genetics, if you want to work. Bring a labtob b/c you won’t be able to keep up writing.

Speck is an awesome professor! So much knowledge and experience; he has no notes, its just him talking about his travels around the world.

I’ve heard professor Brent Iverson is an AMAZING ochem prof. Is this true?! Every review seems to praise him for being so amazing, and it would really be beneficial to get a great ochem professor to learn from and so I won’t get screwed on the MCATs. The ochem professors at UT are much better at UT than at A&M from the reviews I read on myedu. Any other recommedations besides Iverson, though? Hope there will be spaces for transfer students to get him. :/

Iverson is the best ochem professor to choose from. He wrote the book that all the other classes use (I believe, unless some have moved to other texts). I had another ochem prof and sat in on iverson’s class and it was significantly more entertaining and interesting.

Xcellerarator, iverson’s classes already full.

Well I’m not transferring to UT until Fall '10. Hopefully I’ll get to sign up for his classes though.

If anyone is an Engineering Major, Definitely choose Professor William Rory Coker for Physics I. He’s the head coordinator of the Physics Department at UT and he’s a beast! He actually knows what he is teaching and really derives everything for you to see. His tests are kind of hard but the work pays off in the end. By far the best Physics professor at UT. But for Physics II , Do not take it at UT-It will be RIDICULOUSLY hard. Highly suggest anyone to take it at their local community college or ACC

Coker seems like the worst Engineering Physics I prof from all the reviews and grade distribution on myedu. Only 13% A’s while the other profs have 31% and 44% (Chui & Hoffman). Svets is the only Engineering Physics II prof for Spring '10 that shows on myedu and has 22% A’s, 36% B’s, 34% C’s, 4% D’s, 4% F’s…doesn’t bad to me.

I wouldnt trust myedu. At UT , we have this system called CLIS which is a course evaluation survey database that students personally fill out after the end of a course (only UT students can access this). If you look at it, Coker has some great reviews, IMO

I also suggest you don’t soley rely on myedu. I did that for this semester by only choosing the profs with the highest A distribution, and I ended up making the worst mistakes of my academic life. The classes that I expected “easy” As in, I did not make As in! You should try asking students who have taken the class with that professor and most should give you a fair valuation rather than an extreme point of view.
