Best public University?

I agree with vicissitudes, but since we're on the topic...

Nobody mentioned UConn? It's the best public college in New England.

TourGuide wrote "... But Quincy will tell you Michigan State is."

Yeah, right TourGuide. I repeatedly tout how Michigan State is better than UM and Berkeley. Better than Harvard or Yale; ... Oxford, even... If you're going to spread lies, at least have some scintilla of credibility to make it look good. Unfortunately, you’re just not used to any MSU alum who stands up for her/his school in the face of put-downs and untruths by folks like you. That, yes, one actually does understand the many strengths of the school. Yes, there are such individuals out there – and I almost never ‘put down’ or downgrade other schools like you enjoy doing – it’s just that, through the beauty of cyberspace, we have a greater voice. … Esprit de corps and pride for MSU, TourGuide -- obviously you really have a tough time dealing with it [witness the fact I had not even entered the conversation but was merely enjoying hearing what others had to say]

College2332-
The numbers I posted earlier were for the 2005 entering class. The ones you quote are for 2004.

^^
The numbers you posted are for ADMITTED students, not those who ENROLLED. There is a HUGE difference. You are assuming wrongly that 100% of the top qualified kids will choose to attend. Vanderbilt and Emory both have the higher scores. Vandy: 1300--1470. W&M 1260-1440 (these are the latest numbers released by W&M according to Common Data). William and Mary is a great school, but stop claiming it has the third highest SAT scores in the south -- it doesn't.

UVA, UC Berkeley or TCNJ

College2332-
W&M has the third highest in the South (2005 statistics). Check the website:
http://www.wm.edu/news/?id=5758. The numbers you are looking at are for 2004.

As a current student, at Berkeley, I'd agree with those who say its a very over-rated school.

You don't get to see professor ratings by students (it's kept secret for some reason), and it is very difficult to get classes in cramped majors.

Also, the peer quality is very low. Yes, there are many transfers and for those that chose Berkeley between other top schools (I chose Berkeley over Duke: Biggest mistake of my life), you will really notice the difference between even normal students (which aren't so great to begin with) and transfer students.

Many transfer students had 1100 SAT scores and whatnot but since transfer applications do not take into account SAT score but are mainly based on inflated CC grades, you would never know this.

OF course this might be a good thing to some people because it should make the curve easier but these students often end up in creampuff majors too so they add to grade inflation and depress the value of a Berkeley degree.

I would rank the top public schools as follows.

UVA
UMich
UCLA
UT-Austin
UCB
UF

UCLA should be above berkeley because of its honors program and UT because of its more transparent grading and professor rating.

UCB's higher ranking is completely due to the awesomeness of its graduate program and research, not its undergraduate experience.

UCLA is overrated. Put it anywhere that's not LA and it would be on the level of a 2nd tier college.

Also, at UCB, the vast majority of the student body is made of bitter, Stanford rejects. ;)

Ooh...Stanford vs. Berkeley is dangerous, touchy ground to be treading...

Haha.

indiana university- bloomington

Again Mac, those stats are for admitted students, not enrolled...

Mac your incessant bias with respect to william and mary is no different than the propaganda that flourished under Stalin's Soviet Union.

I'd put the following ahead of W&M --
Duke, Rice, Vanderbilt, Emory, Davidson, Washington and Lee, and UVA.

What a Baiter!

I'd actually agree with him though Davidson is only slightly better.

UC-Los Angeles
UC-Berkeley
UVA
UW-Madison
UM-Ann Arbor
UNC-Chapel Hill

You could extend it, but I think most people would agree with this list as being the top Tier of Public Schools.

All of the following are high quality public universities...in alphabetical order:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Cal Poly Pomona
College of William and Mary
Georgia Tech
Indiana University at Bloomington
Miami University at Oxford (Ohio)
Michigan State University
Ohio State University
Pennsylvania State University at University Park
Purdue University at West Lafayette
Rutgers University at New Brunswick
Texas A&M University at College Station
Virginia Tech
University of Arizona
University of California at Berkeley

This is my unexpert opinion...not sure if most people agree with this. But students who go to these schools in general receive a good education.

nothing can beat the UC system

Wisconsin should be in the conversation.

Berkeley by farr
