Best public University?

Michigan, Virginia, UNC, LA, Berkeley. In that order.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is severely underrated. It deserves a lot more credit than what it's been given. With one of the best business and engineering programs in the country and the third largest university library after Harvard and Yale, and the only airport in the country owned by an institution of higher education, UIUC is truly a star among the nation's universities. It's largely overlooked however, because of its slack admission standards and its lack of student body diversity. But the quality of the school's academic programs, the richness of the school's resources in terms of both the number of award-winning faculty members (not to mention the 23 Nobel prize recipients from UIUC) and the vast number of world-class facilities can easily land the university in the top ten public universities in the country

For those who aren't into big schools (like me) -- William & Mary

hahahahaha...UConn is not listed?!

"UC-Los Angeles
UC-Berkeley
UVA
UW-Madison
UM-Ann Arbor
UNC-Chapel Hill

You could extend it, but I think most people would agree with this list as being the top Tier of Public Schools."

-Your missing William and Mary and UCSD. If those schools are not in your top list of publics, Wisconsin surely does not belong.

MY LIST:

UC Berkeley
Michigan
Virginia
UCLA
UNC
UCSD
William and Mary
Wisconsin

Goruman Report top publics

Michigan

Cal-Berkeley

Wisconsin

UCLA

Illinois

Minnesota

UC-San Diego

Indiana

UNC-Chapel Hill

SUNY-Buffalo

Texas

Ohio State

Virginia

UC-Irvine

Penn State

UC-Davis

Iowa

Georgia Tech

Michigan State

Purdue

Rutgers

SUNY-Stony Brook

UC-Santa Barbara

(from best to worst)Michigan, Virginia, UIUC/UNC, Berkeley, UCLA in that order.

If you live in CA, and have reasonably good grades (~3.5 GPA) UCI is ridculously easy to get in to. You'd think they'd be more selective.

A2Wolves6's list is slanted, the guy who compiled the report, Jack Gourman, is a professor from the University of Michigan! That and The Gourman Report came out in 1997...

Top 5

UCSB - They are right on the beach

UCLA - They are good at everything

UCSD - I like San Diego

UMich - Mich is pronounce like mitch (it sounds better).....so people should say UMich is the B.itch

UW-Madison - Washington sucks....UWisconsin @ Madison is the real U Dub

University of Washington is not only one of the top 10 med programs in the country, the College is consistently ranked near the top. Additionally, seattle is the PERFECT college town. I wish I didn't leave here or else UW would be near the top of my list.

"University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is severely underrated."

Yeah, I mean they invented the Internet Explorer, how prestigious is that?

Berkeley and Michigan are on the league of their own, among public universities.

I agree with above but UVA should be mentioned along with them.

Sorry about the blunt statement above. What I meant was considering all majors that the university may offer. Of course if you were to consider engineering UIUC would be mentioned along side them, and if business then UCLA should be top notched too. Berkeley and Michigan and are good in all area, even more so than UVA.

UCLA doesn't have undergraduate business. It can't be mentioned.

Ok sorry for the mistake. I could give you other examples of top-notched programs that are comparable with the best public universities.

UCSD - Biology/Bioengineering
GA Tech - Engineering <-- not quite sure about this one
UTA (Plan 2 honors), Architecture
UIUC - Accounting

who the hell wants to go to wisconsin

Anyone who wants the best combination of academics, social life, athletics, great campus and interesting college town.
