Best resources for ACT prep

Looking for ACT prep resources to study on my own, books, videos or online prep. Want to raise score from 29 to 33-34.

A lot of tutors use this :https://www.amazon.com/Book-Practice-Problems-Manhattan-Prep/dp/194123450X

I actually raised my 29 to a 33 by using a free online source. I will put the link but basically, I just did a section or two every day or almost every day. I made the mistake of not practicing the reading section though because on my last one I had gotten a 35 but when I retook it I got a 29 which lowered my score. Best tip is to target your weak spots but still practice your strengths.

I would absolutely use the ACT Black Book. You can find it online, with its companion book that is full of practice test questions and material. It helped me raise my initial score of 25 by 2-3 points (and I eventually ended up getting a 34)! Best of luck on the ACT. Persistence and going over your incorrect answers is key.

Getting a good tutor can work wonders. My son got a 24 and a 26 on the English grammar sections in two practice exams, then got a 35 in that section on the actual June test date! He did 5 two hour sessions of tutoring, that was all the prep he did, and I don’t know what that tutor said it him but it obviously worked

@bh2021 was it one of the online “Skype” tutors or did he see work with someone in person?

My son worked with someone in person, at ‘Sylvan Learning’ on Pico Boulevard in Beverly Hills. ($60/hour, very reasonable, and it’s even cheaper if you buy a bunch of sessions at once.) They have a ‘grammar expert’ there, and golly gee I’m going to go there and shake this persons hand one day for raising my son’s score from 26 to 35 in that section. My son is going to go back there for essay writing. He ended up getting a 34 composite score, and on his practice exams he got a 29 and a 32. I should note he didn’t have that many sessions at Sylvan (maybe 4 or 5) so if you do go there, I wouldn’t necessarily buy in bulk, but I can’t say enough how much a great tutor can really make studying a lot more efficient. Because it was also finals, my son didn’t do any other studying for the ACT (he’s only a sophomore so this was basically a practice round, which is why he didn’t do the essay either), but wow I cant believe how much they helped him.

Hmmm…I tried to upload a screenshot of my son’s ACT scores, but I guess this website doesn’t allow pictures (?) I haven’t been on this site much, so maybe there’s a way to do it that I can’t figure out?

Why do you need to upload the scores? You already stated what they were. Congrats to your son. With my son the English section went way up after getting some suggestions from a tutor I think it was more rules that he didn’t have down or something like that. Lots of schools don’t want the writing section anymore and many are dropping this requirement. Might want to check this out before having him take it again with writing.

I disagree with all the people who say you need a dedicated tutor to ace the ACT. I’d say that all you need to do is just take practice tests with progressively harder time limits, as the problems themselves don’t have the “tricky” nature of SAT questions. The crucial part is doing them fast. Use the Barron’s book or get a test prep center membership to take weekly practice tests.
