I know a lot goes into admissions and without detailed admissions/essay/ or recommendations answers could be inaccurate but I am just wondering strictly based on my numbers. If it helps my EC is weak. I am just a member of a handful of clubs(no leadership) and will have Eagle Scout by the time I start applying. I just recently got my SAT score and am keen to know where I stand.
I’ve heard there a tiers of Computer Science schools. Like you have Stanford, Berkeley, CMU , MIT etc. I doubt that these schools are even within reach so what IS within reach for me. Anyways here are the numbers:
SAT: 1970
CR: 670 M: 680 W: 620
GPA: 3.7 (Weighted)
I know where my weaknesses are and that I really should have a higher GPA but I really slacked and didn’t perform up to my potential.
Sorry for not asking about specific schools! I am just wondering where I have a shot. Location or Tuition doesn’t matter I am just wondering what’s the best Computer Science school based on what I have. I can then gear my college search on schools I am recommended. Thanks!
With those scores, Berkeley, MIT, Stanford, and CMU are not looking like viable options. Your scores/GPA are not bad by any means, it’s just that these schools are very, very difficult to get into. What state do you live in? That determines a lot, especially for public schools. But as of right now, I’d say:
I’m in New York but none of the schools like Binghamton, Stony Brook, RIT, or RPI really interest me. I mean these could change. I knew the top schools were viable options haha. I wish I could believe that they were. Thanks for these schools! I was already looking at a few of them and am happy to know that I even have somewhat of a chance at a few of them.
Um. UCI for you and I are reaches (we are at the same gpa), especially since we’re both applying as a computer science major. Any CSU would be good, like CSULA or CSU Long Beach. I’m From Silicon Valley and tech corps here really do not care about which college you went to nor your GPA. Best of luck bro, if you need to talk with someone in your same situation, just message me, I will be here to help!
Your scores are low for Berkeley, MIT, Stanford and CMU. Have you considered University of Washington - Seattle? As long as you put a decent amount of effort into your application, you will be admitted into UW. You will need to perform well once you are admitted into UW, as the Computer Science program admits around 25% of students with a very high yield rate with GPAs hovering near the 4.0 mark. UW has a top 10 CS program. If I remember correctly, they’re ranked number 6 in the US.
Last year’s freshman class at UW had a mean GPA of 3.76 unweighted. Also, it is more selective for nonresidents and had a 19% increase in nonresident applications this year. Your SAT is in range, but GPA and nonresident make it a low reach. If you can get the GPA up a little, it would be a high match. Good luck. Bridgewood is right: it has a great CS program. Here is an interesting study about some well known CS programs, including UW: http://qz.com/343521/18-universities-produce-half-of-us-and-canadas-computer-science-professors/
