Best Schools For Journalism and Media?

I am currently in the middle of my college search, focusing on schools with great journalism and media affairs programs. I LOVE Washington DC, and have considered GW as a possible university because of its School of Media and Public Affairs. However, I have also heard great things about Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism, but also that it is extremely competitive.

Currently, I have a 4.05 GPA and take several honors/AP courses. I am editor in chief of both my school's yearbook and newspaper. Other extracurriculars include cross country, theater, and Model UN. My test scores aren't great, but I hope to improve my ACT from a 28 (my first time) to a 32 or above. I go to a prep school in the New England area.

Do I have a chance at Medill? Where else should I look?

If you like NU, definitely apply! I’m also a fellow rising senior who wants to study journalism and love DC too. Northwestern is definitely tough to get into, but you have no chance if you don’t even apply. When I visited Northwestern, I really fell in love with it. Medill is really awesome, and they have fantastic facilities.

As far as the DC area goes, American University has a good program, as do University of Maryland and George Mason University, which are both fairly close to DC. There’s also Georgetown, which has a journalism minor.

For other areas: Syracuse, Ball State University, NYU, University of Miami, University of Washington, University of Texas, University of Missouri (oldest j-school in America), UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Oregon, and Ohio University also have excellent programs. That’s a fairly wide range of locations and safeties/matches/reaches.
