Northwestern Medill School of Journalism

Hola, amigos. Soy un junior in high school and I'm trying to get into Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism. Here's my positives:

4.67 weighted GPA (out of 4.0)
Straight A's in every class, every quarter (except B+ in Algebra for one, which I got a 92.8 and my school stopped rounding grades)
All honors classes since freshman year except for biology. I'm not looking to go into science anyways.
I have the most stories written for my HS newspaper, plus every story I've written has been on the front page.
I have a popular college basketball website in which I've posted 50 articles in the 8 months I've had it. It has thousands of views, and its Twitter account currently has 600+ followers and 2,500 tweets (yes, I'm actually bragging about Twitter followers here - sue me).
Very lengthy and strong letters of recommendation from my US History H and American Lit H teachers about my writing ability.
NHS member
School Representation Club member (highest prestige club in school)
Healthy number of volunteer hours at local schools for tutoring (which I am a leader for) and at a different school for after-care
Baseball team for 2 years
Aviation Club member

Only taken SAT once. Got an 1890 (670 reading, 650 math, 580 writing). Definitely not as well as I can do, as I got a 710 on the math portion of PSAT and 630 on PSAT writing as well. I took a mock ACT once and got 30's on math and writing and a 27 on reading. I'll take both a few more times, assume the scores go slightly up.

That's the gist of it. Anything I forgot is likely insignificant. Here are my negatives:

Horrible student to my standards in freshman and sophomore years. I was still in all honors classes but my GPA was at around 3.6. Sophomore year I slightly improved (about 3.8) but I got a D, D, D and C+ in chemistry honors, which absolutely trucked my GPA. I wasn't stupid, I just didn't do jack sh-t. Which could mean I was stupid, but oh well. I was a lazy bum due to lack of past failures and some personal issues, but HALLELUJAH I'M A CHANGED STUDENT!!!

More negatives: I have about 16 absences this year from being sick an unusual amount of times. Wasn't a problem freshman or sophomore year, tho.

Overall, I have a burning passion in both print and broadcast journalism. I'll be taking AP English, creative writing, and contemporary lit along with all honors classes next year and expect to succeed. I've also applied to the Medill Cherubs summer program for rising seniors and expect to succeed in that as well.

Don't be afraid to say definite yes or no's. I didn't come here for "oh, well, with hard work who knows what could happen :-)!" Quickly review the positives vs negatives one last time and give me an honest answer. ANY OTHER INFORMATION ON MEDILL OR NORTHWESTERN, BE IT ADMISSIONS, CLASSES OR UNIVERSITY LIFE, WOULD BE PHENOMENAL.

Bless your soul if you read all of this and leave an answer. Can't thank you enough.

Bump me hard!

You have fairly good chances, in my opinion. By the way, you really should only be bumping twice a day, lol. Good luck.

Haha thank you. I’m new to this website, clearly.

Your stats seem very strong. If things don’t turn out good, I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO APPLY TO NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY IN QATAR. They have a renowned Journalism program, that is IDENTICAL to the campus in Evanston, Illinois. I can almost guarantee you that with your numbers, they would offer you a very good scholarship. I understand Qatar is far away, but you have to be willing to go to anywhere for success. Here is the website link: http://www.qatar.northwestern.edu/</a>. Definitely check it out and apply there. They are about to open a new multi million dollar state of the art campus. With your numbers, you stand at least an 90% chance of being accepted. At the end of the day, you would receive the exact same diploma from the campus in Qatar, than you would in the United States. I strongly encourage you to apply. Even though you might have missed the deadline, the admissions office is very helpful, and would possibly make an exception. I wish you the best of luck, and hope you accomplish your goals.

Sincerely,
THATETHIC

@THATETHIC
It is very likely that he would not want to switch countries.

It depends how bad he truly wants to become a Northwestern student. Also, he would have the opportunity to experience new cultures, and learn much more there, than he would at the main campus.

Medill is very competitive, but you should have a good shot if your SAT score improves significantly. A 2100-2150+ would be optimal.

I would guess a lot of Medill applicants have similar stats and ECs. What sets you apart, really? Maybe look at a lot of other journalism programs. That Qatar idea is really interesting, I must say. Let us know if you check it out.

NWU Medill: Reach (a few non-reaches: Syracuse Newhouse, UMO)

The Qatar program may even have better recruiting. It seems like grads have no problem getting offers from top media firms in, say, London or Middle East. Given how hard it is to get a good gig in the US, that may not be a bad idea if you are adventurous.
