Agree with @kmrcollege : SUNY Stony Brook is definitely a well respected university for Applied Math. NYU Courant Institute is also well respected, and well known, but doesn’t fall in the category of “not too expensive” private! Smaller LAC’s are not going to offer the level of breadth in math courses, and usually tend to consist of profs who are more into undergrad research than in publishing at the national level (unlike the profs at SBU or NYU). Nothing wrong with that - just something to be aware of.
