What are the recommended universities in the south (FL, GA preferrably) for those who want to major in English, or if not, Comparative Literature, Classics, History or Philosophy? I'm a freshman in a state university right now and its campus activities don't offer a lot of opportunities in these fields.

Well, this is likely the first time you will see these schools recommended on Collegeconfidential, but...

U of Mississippi and Mississippi State University have reputedly excellent English/Literature departments. I believe there's a writing center at UM named after William Faulkner; it regularly sponsors a conference on southern writers/literature. Also, I know a fellow, a New Yorker who by chance enrolled at MSU undergrad and enjoyed it so much he earned his M.A. and consequently taught english there for a couple of years.

Actually, LakeWashington is correct. MSU has a good english major.

Also, I think Sewanee (University of the South) has one of the best departments for english in the south.

I would second Sewanee; they have a fabulous English department.
They started the Sewanee Review and Tennessee Williams left them a nice legacy, I believe.
