Im currently looking for a credit card, and am seriously looking into the CitiBank MTV U card. Do any of you have any experience with this card, and are there any other good student cards out there that you guys know of?

I have a citi card through which I get cash rewards, which as a student I really appreciate. I've found that their customer service is helpful and friendly. Good luck in choosing.

Which card is that? The Dividend Platinum or just the Platinum?

I have a regular checking account with a debit card, which are fine for my basic purposes--paying for books, withdrawing money from atm, ect.

if you want to build credit, its best to get one through a store/movie theater/ect that you visit often, and use it soley for that and a few other things, so that way you can build credit but you get paybacks...they're usually more lenient on interest/paying back/rewards

store/movie theater/etc are such bad options, they tend to have higher interest rates than normal credit cards. Plus store credit cards only encourages you to purchase clothes at the store, or get debt into something you don't really need in college.

I started out with just a regular capitalone card....pretty basic...nothing special. IMHO your first card really doesn't matter because your interest rate is going to be out of control regardless. Just pay your bills on time with with time you'll see better offers roll in and you can pick and choose.

I think Capital One or Discover or someplace like that flat out denied my application because I had no credit history. Make sure someone cosigns with you if you want any kind of reasonable limit.

^ even though i know it happens, i find it hard to believe people are getting flat out denied.

my first charge card was an amex green card that i signed up for without a cosign when i was 18. anytime i would spend money - it would go on that card. you can't carry a balance on a charge card, so you don't have to worry about getting into debt.

at 21 i actually have a platinum card - which even though the annual fee is ridiculous, the numerous features - which i have used several of - have more than paid for the annual fee. They've given me 2 new Xbox 360's (400 each) even though one way or another they been destroyed by me or my friends and amex has replaced a $300 pair of sunglasses I lost. not bad service.

My D. uses a credit card tied to her bank (Wachovia) which she finds convenient and it has "world points". She is using her points for airfare this spring break. My S. has a Citibank card because he likes the cash back feature. Neither carry a balance over month to month, so I really don't know how interest rates compare.

I'm referring to the Dividend Platinum. I'm like mkm's kids in that I don't carry a balance so the interest rate isn't something I can specifically speak to. If you're looking into getting this specific card would you please PM me so that I can get a reward for referring you?

Check out www.cardweb.com You will be able to compare cards to see which would be best for you.

if you fly united, united has a student credit card, too. Whatever you get just make sure there isn't an annual fee.

in short, make sure you get a credit card with some sort of rewards program.

while my parents swear by airline points, cash back is probably our best bet as we have to spend $1000s in order to get 1 plane ticket...i.e. we may not spend enough over our entire college time in order to get 1 plane ticket home. i know i won't.

im getting a wachovia visa card...

i have a Capitol One platinum card. the only reason i got the offer was because im a university student. cuz i have no credit history. they're taking a chance on college students with no credit cuz they think they will graduate and get a job and be loyal customers. and they think university students have some responsibility and will be less likely to not pay a bill.

actually the only reason u got the card was because they figure you will get into debt and that your (hopefully) solvent parents will bail you out.

I actually have the MTVU card and really like it - the 0% APR is great, and they're really great on the phone. Also, great online banking, which as a college student I really appreciate. I didn't really care about the MTV part of the card, but if you buy MTV stuff, or you want to go to the VMA's (with like 15,000 points you can get 2 free tickets) it's nice. And they gave me a high credit limit with very little credit history.

I HAD a first financial card - stunk, not very friendly over the phone, no online features (they said they did, but you could only pay the minimum online, and that was AFTER a $9 charge), high APR, low credit limit, overall not helpful. I've also had bad experiences with American Express.

I have a 1st Financial Bank student visa. There's no yearly fees or anything, which is nice, and I don't worry about interest because I always pay everything off. The only things I don't like are that paying online or on the phone charges you $9, and you don't get benefits. You also start with only $250 as your limit (with no credit history), but after 3-4 months of paying off on time, mine was raised to $1000.

Does anyone know of any cards that give airline miles not limited to one particular airline?

If you get a United card, you can spend your miles on any airline within the Star Alliance.
