My son is going into his junior year in high school. He may be interested in studying film/ video as part of his college degree. A couple of summers ago he went to Socapa and enjoyed the program. Next summer he will probably be working on a film submission for college. What summer program would be best that could offer good mentoring and critique etc?</p>

<p>Definitely definitely definitely apply to NYU Tisch’s Summer Filmmaker’s Workshop. It is by far the BEST summer film program - extremely competitive and time-consuming, but extremely rewarding. You’re taught by actual NYU undergrad / grad film professors and are lectured by the likes of John Cannemaker, Andy Goldman, and more. Your peers are super talented, diverse, and dorm life and the city are amazing. Plus you leave with a personal portfolio film under your belt. </p>
<p>Oh, and the professors keep a file on you so that when you apply it’s pulled out and read with your application. If you do well in the program, you’re essentially into the best film school in the nation. Most participants are accepted to Tisch, and many attend. </p>

<p>I had looked into summer programs for my son as well but ultimately decided against them because of price and number of weeks. Also, the cheaper ones seemed pretty basic and he was already doing video classes for 4 years at his high school.</p>
<p>I did like the Northwestern one (Cherubs). Chapman has a 2 week program. Emerson and Boston U also have programs. I think a friend’s son did something at UCLA. My son ultimately did a 2 week writing workshop - there are many to choose from, and I’m sure screenwriting is available as well.</p>
