Waiting is the best option. RAM prices have been tanking over the last few months and it looks like cpus might do the same thing in a month or two. You certainly wont be paying more than you would be now for the same hardware if you waited until june. If you want the best possible price check deal sites (fat wallet for instance) often they usually have codes for places like Dell that will get you an extra 10%+ off.

Personally i dont like my laptop though for in class use. its way too big and heavy (17inch, 14+pounds). If i had to do it all over again id get a desktop and one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/NEC-MOBILEPRO-900C-HANDHELD-PCs_W0QQitemZ320099468544QQihZ011QQcategoryZ11173QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If you're getting a Mac, Apple is going to release updates to the entire line within a couple months. After the updates nothing is likely to change until towards the end of the year. I'm planning on getting my Macbook Pro in late June.

same here. hopefully leopard is out by then too.

I'm going with Windows XP because I already know the operating system fairly well AND that is going to offer me the best support at school. You might want to check with your college to see what kind of support they will be able to offer. SEMO says there will be limited support for Vista until at least spring 2008.

would it be unneccessary to get a new dekstop and a new laptop?

i don't know if i should bring a dekstop/laptop so should i just get both?

you can work for like 2 or 3 months in summer. A good job, and buy a decent laptop

btw: almost every laptop today is very decent

there's no recent to really have your desktop and laptop in your room. a laptop will give you more flexibility to work with it. a desktop can't really be moved around but if you want it to play games then your probably better off with that then.

All these posts and no one has the right answer?

The best time to buy a new laptop is right when new processors or updated models come out. Prices get slashed across the board whenever that happens since companies hate holding onto old inventory.
