Best time to take SAT in regards to math level

I am a sophomore in Algebra 2 and am considering taking the SAT this spring. My only concern is that there will be math concepts beyond algebra 2 on the test. Should I take it this spring, or wait until next year when I am in pre-calculus?

As long as you know Algebra and some Geometry you’ll be in good shape. Look at some practice tests and see if you feel comfortable.

The SAT I Math is definitely doable without Precalc, but I have found that Precalc does make it a lot easier. I mean, you can get a 800 on Math IIC and I promise you, you will still make mistakes. But aside from those kind of errors, before I took the Subject Test, I always got stuck on one or two questions, in that I didn’t know how to solve them, which was embarassing because everyone seemed to think Math was so easy.

However, after Precalc, things became WAY easier. After Precalc there will be almost nothing you will not know on the Math section, since the questions cover relevant concepts but at a much more toned-down level.

Since you are a sophomore, I would say there’s really no rush. You shouldn’t take the SAT too many times, so I recomment you don’t take it until you’ve had some time to tackle several practice test books (and not just several practice tests period) and get comfortable with the test format. You don’t need to reach your goal score on your first try, but it would be wise to get a certain number so you don’t have to worry about bringing up your score by several hundred points.
