Best UC for History?

Hey all,

Just wondering what the best UC was for the history major, or who has the strongest history department.

So far I'm thinking either Cal or Davis.

Any facts/advice?

Thanks

UC Berkeley (My friend who is a history major here says Cal is routinely tied with Yale for the top history dept in the nation...though I'm not sure what rankings he is refering to and if this is for graduate or undergraduate rankings...)

I'm taking history of ancient med right now (and our prof used to teach at Yale...go figure hahah) but in any case, I'm really enjoying this class.

I've heard berk/ucla....then davis

And to answer Cardinal, I believe berk and yale are constantly ranked #1/#2/#3 in graduate school, and ucla is also top 10... but I don't know if this translates to undergrad or not?

so basically, any major's better in Berkeley except communications and cinema & films (those are for UCLA)... and MAYBE (im not sure about this one) the marine biology (I think UCSD has this one).

There is a trickle down effect. My history GSI is really brilliant, i.e. he makes things more engaging for us undergrads, can answer most of the curiosities we have, and is in general, just really bad ass and knowledgable when it comes to his field....

From a list of the leading institutions for undergrad history programs my counselor gave me...

2 UC Berkeley

16 UCLA

28 UCSB

29 UCSD

44 UC Davis

Keep in mind that each school has different areas of focus, so you may want to research each UC. If you're looking for some really interesting areas, check out UCSDs History program's web site.

Thank you Buerre! As a history major this information is of great importance, as it will allow me to chose an institution that will better cater to my educational needs :)

I'm contemplating switching to history...I'll give you guys more info once I speak to the major advisor this week... :)

what about art history (not art). which uc is best for art history?

NONE! Get a real major!

LOL! {10 characters}

hahahahahaha well said...come join the ranks of ties and white coats!

Sauronvoldemort, I do not have info for art history. If you're in college now, your counselors should have a book that lists that kind of info.

Ha, I'm a history major myself but not a day goes by when I think to myself "You may love studyin history now, but lets not kid ourselves... u aint doin **** w/ it in the real world"....bring on law school!

exactly what part of history are interested in. if ur focusing on ancient history, isn't it better to declare classics major? i mean, i really cannot bring myself to imagine ancient history to contain substance without literature, greek/latin, philosophy, original scholarships. plato, plotinus, etc. MUST be studied individually to understand not just history, but EVERYTHING. "western philosophy is footnotes to plato" (whitehead). anyway, i chose art history instead of classics, because classics is too encompensing. i mean do u know how difficult it is to learn latin?! even the renaissance english translation of more's utopia (written in latin) is so pathetically difficult (because of that extremely complex latin syntax) with words that's not even found in dictionary. my main point is that majors should be studied carefully.
