Best Undergrad Residence Hall?

Anybody out there know which North campus hall is known for being the most lively, fun, social? Donlon, Dickinson, and Mews look pretty cool.

dickson's the largest, consists of mostly singles - will have a few triples/doubles, but rare.

donlon's known as the "social" dorm because of its shape

mews, along with CKB, is new and nice

it doesn't really matter though, you'll find friends regardless of where you live, usually in your major, or classes. i'd recommend looking into some program housing too. it offers a totally different perspective on freshman year and RAs usually aren't as strict (in my experience).

donlon was built to be social...but can be bad when you're trying to study...

dickson is social by the mere fact that it's the biggest dorm in the ivy league...

mews isnt as social as it is new and pretty...

I live in Court-Kay-Bauer (CKB) and I absolutely love it and wouldn't want it any other way. My particular floor is luckily very social, and we all hang out together.

You get the benefits of having a newer dorm with bathrooms shared with only 4 other people. The luxury of a common room with a TV, and a study room on each floor. Ping pong and pool lounge on the first floor. conference room to study.

Anyone from other dorms that comes to visit is usually jealous.

Downsides? Not very spirited for the most part, and dorm and hall socials are not well attended.

chendrix basically said it all; I lived in CKB last year and absolutely loved it. I also spent a lot of time in Donlon and Dickson, as they were very social dorms.

CKB, donlon, dickson are the best.

too bad none of this matters since you can't choose where you want to live :)

i lived a year in donlon, it was terrible. it was so loud, i mean i could find a different place to study and all but it was really troublesome for me to fall asleep since im a really light sleeper. people kept talking and stuff really late at night and the RA never does anything. the walls and doors are pretty bad at keeping noise out because even you can hear people chatting from the end of the hall.

but it is known as a social dorm so if your a heavy sleeper donlon should be good for you

I live in Balch and I love it, even though most people who don't live there think it's terrible. It's definitely not that social, but I really like that about it. Before you decide that I'm some really anti-social recluse who just wants to sit in solitary silence studying and sleeping, I'll say that this is the exact opposite of the truth. I go out about 4 nights a week and have a very active social life. I don't need a dorm to program a schedule and make friends for me. My friends who live in social dorms hate it because they have to listen to all of the "hall parties" while they try to get work done before going out. Don't get me wrong, there are some halls where the people actually are compatible, but often people use the dorm as an easy substitution for going out and making their own friends. I'm really grateful to have a nice big room to retreat to and host my own gatherings with friends that I, and not the housing system, chose.

Balch may not be for everyone, but I think everyone should rethink the automatic assumption that they want a social dorm.

yea thats why i think quieter dorms are better because you can always visit a more social dorm and have quiet time at your own. whereas you can't really go into a quieter dorm to sleep and stay at your own for social stuff

haha seriously. I looked at the class of 2013 facebook group for kicks and they talk a lot about where they're looking to live and which dorm to choose. Unless they want a program house or balch, hopefully they wont be too disappointed.

^true...CKB and Mews do have the newest stuff

I live in Donlon, and it's amazing. There aren't many people I've met in there who second guess that they'd be happier elsewhere.

First, it's an amazing location (right across the street from RPCC dining hall and Nasties), and not too far away from 3 or 4 bus stops next to RPCC.

Second, the halls are set up so that you have to walk around to get in and out of the dorms and to the bathrooms, so it gives you many many opportunities to meet everyone on your floor. There's also a common room in the middle right when you get off the elevators or stairs. Basically, many many reasons why you see most of the people in your hall very often, and most people say hi and stop to chat, which is why I think we're considered one of the "social dorms". Suite style dorms are quieter since there's no real reason to visit other suites, unless you're lucky to get a few social butterflies on your floor who go out of their way to meet other people.

People who don't live in Donlon tend to say it's crap, but the rooms are a pretty good compared to people in Clara Dickson or the Low/High Rises that have to share forced triples or forced doubles. The only downfall is that we don't have air con...which CKB only uses for the first month or so of school anyways.

It's very true that Donlon is one of the louder dorms. I learned this after a few weeks and just got earplugs when it was too loud to go to sleep. Also, my roommate snores very loudly when he gets sleep deprived (which is often, since he's an engineer lol). Simple solution, problem solved.

There's also a huge study room on the first floor of Donlon. It's only for quiet individual studying, and people are very respectful down there when it comes to the noise level. I think everyone down there understands its difficult to study in your dorm room in Donlon.

soo you don't really have any say on which dorm you'll be living in??

Not unless you choose one of the program houses.

yea i tried that too but cornell only sells ear plugs that blocks like 29 decibels... =( i guess i could have bought better ones elsewhere but i guess i was too lazy to do it =D, and sleeping with earplugs is pretty uncomfortable

i was in a loud suite/floor in high rise 5...

i learned to do work wearing headphones...look for sounds of nature mp3s on dc++
