Best undergraduate major for law school.

I am applying to FIU for the Fall of 2011, only to find out that there is no pre-law major. I want to find a high-paying major, other than political science.

Thanks for your help.

This is the grand paradox. If you go to an easy undergraduate program and get an A average (poli sci) then the world is your oyster given that you put a little bit of effort and get that a average. However if you go major into finance or engineering or life sciences, then your program will be difficult and you will in all likelihood not get an a average. The result is that those who go to easy programs like poli sci get the As and get into law school/grad school. Whereas those who go to the hard program might get A, but if they do then there is little reason for them to go to grad school anyways, as a finance major with an A could get into a way higher paying job than any grad school Likewise for engineers and similar for life science if they are willing to go into banking or consulting or something no life sciencey. The problem is most people who go into finance majors don’t get As and when they dont get As they don’t get the high paying jobs, and their grades are too low (B- to B+) to get into the top grad schools which want an A-. Thus be careful how you choose your program

Pretty much anything you enjoy and/or will do well in. I enjoy hstory. You get to read and write a lot. I also feel that hstory is a combination of all of the social sciences. On any given assigned reading I encounter economics, politics, social issues and etc. Also being a history major forces you to take many foreign language classes, forcing you to learn the language.

If you want something that will give you viable career prospects outside of law, you’d need to look into business/economics, engineering and the physical sciences/math. Of course if you went to a school with better brand recognition, you’d have more options.

I am looking for a major for Entertainment Law. any advise?

Anything but pre-law or legal studies… You seem disappointed FIU does not have pre-law, but majoring in that is a mistake. My advice is something you enjoy and can excel in. Journalism might be a good one for entertainment law, strictly because the interests match. You will learn about reporter’s privilege, etc. And improving your writing is always useful. But it’s really up to you.

Political science is high paying now?

No,it is just good for law.

Seriously, the best degree you can get is in a hard science degree. Then you can do Intellectual Property law. There are so few attorneys out there with this degree that the biggest and best paying law firms will eat you up once you graduate from law school.

No. The best major is the easiest major. Take the major that will help you get a 4.0
Make sure you read a lot through out your years in college. Read articles from The economist, WSJ etc which are very close to the LSATS. Study a lot of logic. Take some logic courses as well as english courses. Develop a work ethic that will help you succeed in law school.

Music- You learn how to perform in front of people and you learn how to accept criticism.

What is easier between history and polisci? which one is better for prelaw?

Big lol @ this thread.

MOWC is correct in music being one of the more successful pre-law majors. In addition to what she wrote, music majors must have the personal discipline to practice their instrument for hours at a time; this is a work ethic that law schools respect. My daughter is a music major and is applying to law schools now, I will let you know how it works out!

lol, whats so funny about this thread?

I’ll second the LOLs on this thread and gently pat on the back anyone who doesn’t get them.

The image of being eaten up by big, high paying law firms will give me nightmares tonight.

I enjoy the subject of business. IN fact, I would like to one day run one of my own.So, I am majoring in business admin, because I am really interested in it.

Just so you know, we poke fun at, and by poke fun at I mean despise with a passion, Poli Sci, Pre-Law, Dance/Theatre/Music/Art and English majors…its a cop out, we all know it. If you want to pick one of those majors, you need to take up a second major (and not just another one of those), Bio/Chem/Math/Econ/Finance/Accounting/BCMB/Engineering/Physics…you know, something where you do actual work…
