I know this is a pretty old thread but I wanted to share about Mexican schools. There’s some misinformation in this thread regarding UNAM and ITESM (Tec de Monterrey).

First of all, Mexican public schools are much more selective than private schools. Especially the flagship school of each state, and UNAM and IPN. Private schools are not that selective, you just have to be able to afford them. That doesn’t mean private schools are not good. Well most private schools are indeed bad, but the ones that are actually good are top-ranked nationally.

Now, it is impossible to say “X school is the number one,” as each school has different strenghts and weaknesses. UNAM is the best university in the country for hard sciences and humanities, but it has strong engineering programs also. IPN is considered as the best for engineering, ITESM comes as a close second, but it gives its programs a business oriented focus which is praised by some and hated by others.

Hard sciences (math, physics, chemistry, etc.):
- UNAM
- Universidad de Guanajuato
- Universidad de Guadalajara

Business:
- ITAM
- ITESM
- Universidad Iberoamericana

Engineering:
- IPN
- ITESM
- UNAM

Humanities (law, architecture, etc.):
- UNAM
- ITAM
- Universidad Iberoamericana

Medicine:
- UNAM
- Universidad La Salle
- Universidad de Guadalajara

As you can see, UNAM, ITAM, IPN and ITESM are among the top schools in various areas. If I had to make a top 3, I’d pick UNAM, IPN and ITESM, in no particular order.

There’s also the Mexican equivalent of the Ivy League (unofficial), which I think would be:
ITESM
ITAM
Universidad Iberoamericana
Universidad Panamericana
ITESO
Universidad La Salle

Also, each flagship state university is like a junior UNAM so these schools are very good too, and very selective:
UANL
Universidad de Guadalajara
BUAP
Universidad de Guanajuato
UABC
Universidad de Sonora
UAM
UAEM
