Best way to list volunteer hours on resume?

To keep it simple my son’s activity resume for his colleges application simple has the total of volunteer hours listed, not the hours for each time he volunteered. Only one volunteer activity was for more than a one time event so this seemed less distracting than listing between 7 and 21 hours for shorter one time events. Does anyone have any feedback on this?

The way that he has his volunteering formatted now is the best way. Unless he spent a consecutive amount of time doing one specific volunteer opportunity, like volunteering at church, or at the local homeless shelter, etc. then he should just show the total amount of hours he’s volunteered.

My S18 did the same thing, especially since there are only 10 spots for activities on Common App. He put total hours and in the description section listed some of the activities as examples: i.e., community service including serving at soup kitchen, visiting senior center etc…

For his volunteering to be meaningful for admissions, it is more important to convey what he accomplished as opposed to how many hours it took.
