I have done an extensive amount of volunteer work (750+ hours, should have 100 more by December). I’ve worked extensively with each organization (i.e. not doing random food drives here and there). Should I list my work by each organization or under one section.
(I’m going to be working at the hospital for the next six months, but I’m not even sure if I should include that since it’s so late in the game.)
Also, where am I supposed to put the total number of hours I’ve volunteered? I know there is the hours per week - weeks per year section, but I don’t feel like that really shows the commitment I’ve put into this area. Where can I slap that 750 hour label?
Also, I’m an attorney in Teen Court (a diversion program for teens). Should I file this under community service or debate/speech?
I have a lot of service hours too and I’ve been struggling with how to balance them with my clubs/sports on my commonapp. If that’s what has taken up the most of your time then probably list them individually.
Do any of your schools allow you to attach resumes? For me that seemed like good place to expand and put additional info on my service work.
@Elisevl I’ve heard a lot of schools don’t look at resumes…
My kid’s private college counselor told her to group her activities. She put all volunteer activities under Volunteer, then listed all of those programs and put in total number of hrs/week for Volunteer. She also had one for School Organizations (clubs, student council), Sports, Dance, etc.
You can use the Additional Information section to expand on any activities that you feel need more detail/emphasis than the activity section allows.
Since you’re involved so extensively in community service, I think you should list each organization separately.
And for the Youth Court question, I would put it in debate/speech.
Thank you all for the information! It was very helpful.
