I took the ACT in October for the first time with minimal studying and I got a 25. I plan to take the test again in June. I have gotten the Kaplan ACT 2015 version with six practice tests. I am considering getting the Barron’s ACT 36 as well as The Real ACT book. My eventual target score is a 35, but as I am still just a sophomore with lots of time left, I am targeting a score of at least 32 for the test in June. Am I on the right track with the books? What are your suggestions as to how I should prepare for this test considering the score I am shooting for?
You’re really ahead of the game! I would suggest taking a practice test in one of your books and honing the subjects you struggle with the most. I took all of my first standardized tests without studying first to see what portions needed the most work and planned my studying accordingly. While a 35 is very lofty goal and I encourage you to strive for it, do not strain yourself for it. A 32 will pretty much earn you an acceptance to the majority of schools and will be competitive for even Ivy League schools. 32 is in the 98th percentile and the highest scores of 34, 35 & 36 are pretty much reserved for geniuses. Best of luck in the future, and since you’re already starting the ACT I’m sure you’re very motivated and will do very well!
