Best way to self-study an AP?

I've been reading a lot of threads on this particular part of the forum about self-studying AP classes, and it has peaked my interest.

But what is the preferred method of "self-study"? Is it simply buying a prep book and then reading it, or using it in conjunction with the respective textbook?

I've been contemplating about self-studying AP Biology (since I won't have room for it next year on my schedule), and maybe 1 or 2 of the "easy" APs (Env. Sci, Human Geo, Psych) starting at winter break.

Extra info that may help: I'm a junior who goes to a new high school (opened in 2007) that offers only 12 AP classes, and maybe adding a couple more next year.

oops, forgot to add that I’m only taking 2 AP classes at the moment (APUSH and Lit).

Many people here prefers self-studying using only a study guide since study guide are short and comprehensive enough to get you a 5.

If you want to self-study the easy APs, go ahead since you only have two AP classes. For Psychology, Barron’s would be fine since my friend relied on that and PR(it didn’t work well for him) and he received a 5.
