Best World Universities

I am looking for the best universities in the world. I know that there is a ranking out there already. However, I want to have a ranking of universities in a certain subject, that is Computer Science. Anybody can help?

Calteeeeech

No way , i wud say CMU any day.. for CS its just simply AWESOMEEEE.

SM

Thanks for this quick reply first.
Now, two questions:

(1) Is there an official ranking for computer science?
(2) Is Caltech really that great for computer science? USNews ranks it 10th

well there are many official ranking as such ...

one of such is issued by USNEWS for computer science and which also ranks CMU 1st ... but i choose not to exemplify on rankings coz they are highly redundant for college selection if prestige be elliminated from consideration...

As of others there are rankings by private agencies that do rank CS but still no big comprehensive source.

As of caltech the thing is caltech to this day remains famous for its science and engioneering courses which are characterised by its rigor and strength . but here again CMU atleast for CS takes the bigger pie in my opinion...Well for Aerospace and electrical Caltech is better though more than anything ( MIT exception to this rule)

SM

Stanford is the BEST for CS... Its simply incomparable.
If you want to become a BILLIONAIRE after ur CS education, go to Stanford!

ronty, aren't you generalizing the google founders' success?

Hotmail, CISCO, Wipro, Reliance Industries (though his dad was a billionaire too), Kosmix (also Junglee), etc...

oh...I apologize...I am half ignorant..;))

hahaah well for CMU and Caltech the list is equally overwhelming as stanford..
its just that stanford has also produced some great computer science based entrepreneurs ..who have driven billion dollar business empires on their computer prowess..and highlighted by the google people..

SM

Andy Bechtolsheim (M.S. 1976), co-founder of Sun Microsystems ...Robert Dennard (Ph.D. 1958), inventor of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) ....Charles Geschke (Ph.D. 1973), co-founder of Adobe Systems ...James Gosling (M.S. 1983, Ph.D. 1983), creator of Java programming language ... these are all CMU ppl... well and equally succesful for sun. adobe , java and all are powerhouses of computer industry..

SM

Yahoo's, Vault's, Sun Microsystems', Macromedia's and HP's cofounders and founders were from Stanford too :)

In case you noticed all busines based computer ppl are concentrated at stanford and invention based people are based at CMU .. and in any way i fail to see stanford rising high than CMU on this count ..

so if the lists for both are inexhaustive , we can fairly conclude both to be the best .. and let factors beyond academic potential and quality govern the selctions..

SM

yes... Stanford University edges because of the great weather throughout the year as well as its proximity to the Silicon Valley.

The fact is... CMU alumni have the highest average income.

okay here are best schools in Comp Science atleast in USA....
MIT
CMU
Stanford
UC Berkeley
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
University of Michigan Ann Arbor
UT Austin
University of Washington
Princeton University
Cornell
Georgia Institute of technology
University of Wisconsin Madison
California Insitute of technology
Purdue University
UC San Diego
(possibily) UC LA

Now these are top R&D programs and content wise top programs....In short if u have a passion for CS then they are of use...if u'r aim is money that may be lying somewhere else...

By money i meant...both after graduation salaries ( although the schools i mentioned will get you awesome salaries)....
I also meant by that Financial Aid...since most of these schools offer very little or no finaid (barring few)....and for intl's finaid is a reason which makes one apply to lots of ivies although they are not that good in CS or EE....(actually anything apart from Princeton in CS in the ivy league is just a namesake....really take my advice programs are really weak but well if u need finaid then you will have to apply there...i mean the programs are still better than most and an ivy means you have access to facilities like no other and a prestige thingy...so the advice revolves around a key factor that being financial aid :) )

vampiro, were you referring to their Undergraduate Program when you named those universities?

well nah...u cant really refer to the undergraduate program of any university and rank it..because basically all UG level subjects are approximately same (yes though some may be intense but that has got nothing to do with CS...for eg. Caltech's UG program is the most intense but its intense not because of extra CS courses but because of tough core requirement) so if u want to rate a program you have to see what research options are there and what graduate courses you can take...basically in US a unniversity wont 'give' you a program...you have to make it....so u can make a good program if u have variety....

A for me I am going to WPI which is like ranked 53 in USnews...pretty low...still i am registered for a program which even many people at good schools dont follow...so basically a CS program or any other program for that matter is person dependent....
But as i said..these programs are good..because they help you in networking, industry interface...prolly in grad school if u keep your gpa decent...and have UG research options...so thats how i ranked them...
Trust me with those names dude...i have done a lot of research on CS programs..:)

Maxy, the founders of Google completed their undergraduate Maryland-CP (Sergey Brin) and Michigan-Ann Arbor (Larry Page).
