Best/Worst Admission/Rejection Letters

that's an awful assembly to have. why would you single out the people who got into good schools and those who got into lesser schools? there's no reason to create such a tense division. they should tell everyone that people have different interests and end up in the place that's right for them, instead of makinbg the elites feel more elite and the rejects feel more pathetic (even though that was what the assembly was trying to curtail).

Gotta concur with that. There should be one huge general assembly for everybody, assumin' people get accepted by at least one of their choices. I would die if my school had such an assembly. Then again, we only got 30 seniors.

It's not for colleges - it's for high schools. And I guess I oversimplified way too much. It's not for ALL good schools in New York City - just the "big three" specialized science high schools (Stuy, Bronx Sci, Bklyn Tech) - or at least thats how it was when I was there. And there is different information to convey to those groups which is why they are gathered seperately.

The accepted assembly IS for those who got into at least one of their choices (according to the test). If you don't go it just means that you have to go to a local high school and not not one of the specialized ones.

Ooooh. Sorry. I misread.

grin It's a little cool that bein' all the way here I learn about NY High schools and how competitive they are. I'm so clueless about what high schools are seen as prestigious in my home country.

there are six now.

Only six prestigious high schools in the US?

Do you guys think schools should give a reason for declining you admission? I think so. I know they have a lot of applicants to respond to, but a sentence or two would be nice. I mean, when I got rejected from Emerson College, my guidance department called them and I got a reason. But for those who don't have the luxury of that, it would be nice to see it on the paper. I suppose it may make some cry more, but, come on, it will put your mind at rest.

That would be really nice; I wish they'd start doing that.

Even if they did, it would probably just be a bunch of BS about how even though your test scores and GPA and extracurriculars were great, they didn't have enough openings, and there were just people better than you.

Essentially what the rejection letter says, n'est-ce pas?

This is true.

The idea of saying why they rejected you would put my mind at some kind of ease. I mean since people out so much work into their applications it would be nice to have some kind of idea of why someone did not make the cut.

For people still wondering about NYU, I was accepted ED. I got a big white envelope, nothing special on the outside. When you open it though there's a huge folder and it says "Congratulations!" on the outside with a huge picture of NYC I believe, and then inside the folder is the acceptance letter!!!!!

Congrats :)

Cornell's early acceptance letter was awful - "Congratulations, your application has been approved for Fall 2006" Approved for what? Has my application been approved, or have I? Sounds more like they recieved your entire application than they accepted you.

Wasn't this the school of Messrs. Strunk & White?

Better to write, "Congratulations, you have been accepted to Cornell University."

"We did not accept you because . . ."
But that would weaken their power as the gatekeepers. Opacity is power. Explanation necessitates a reason. And well, one may not exist, or at least one satisfactory.

Princeton's was cool because it came in Fedex so you know whats inside ;)

They even put everything in a nice white folder with Nassau Hall embossed or whatever on it. Sure you got a bumper sticker and of all things- an introduction to their Honour Code and a map of Princeton.

But then- they did promise more stuff that should have arrived a week ago

I haven't read The Gatekeepers nor Harvard Schmavard (how spelled?) though I know my GC has the latter. I really love his articles in the Washington. Wish I could dare to borrow the book from GC.

Yay for Fedex, Kj! And fish...

My friend's University of Rochester packet last year was a big folder with "Welcome to the Class of 2009!" on it. Heehee. Self explanatory.
Don't remember all the other acceptances...

ahh...princeton sent me a deferrel letter.......it was awful!!

Wake Forests' acceptance was a trick! They said it would be four weeks after you apply and after three weeks I got a letter that was regular sized and thin. I figured I forgot to send a photograph or didn't give my brothers name. However, I opened it up and saw the deposit then the words congratulations. I don't think I read the letter until the next day lol.

Wow, U of M dearborn really is awesome - on top of the Tshirt, today someone from the admissions office left a message on my phone congratulating me on getting accepted... maybe they're really desperate to up their yeild rates, since they're more or less widely used as a safety? either that, or they're really, really, really nice.

"That would be really nice; I wish they'd start doing that."

ha it'd be really nice to hear why you suck?
