I disagree about the women. You must have some really really high standards. There are plenty of good looking ones.

I agree. There are a lot of hot girls here. I think it's just a myth that UM has ugly girls.

I love how MightyNick and CCRunner object to the claim that Michigan Women aren't hot (which is of course, not true) but how they do not mind the claim that Michigan students are arrogant. Priorities! LOL!

There are ugly girls here, but with 40,000 students, there are a lot of good-looking girls as well.

Arrogance is a wash...people (mainly from MSU, other Michiganders who didn't go here) like to play that out a lot, I see some of it, but not a ton. If kids from MSU want to call me arrogant and trash talk my school, fine. I will throw as much arrogant crap back at you as I can. Otherwise, I really don't care. The "Harvard of the West" t-shirts don't do much for our cause though.

worst: umich gpa for applying

I dunno, I have seen alot of arrogance..
People ask me where I'm going, and I say I haven't decided yet, they say, "Oh, you didn't get into UofM?" When I answer, that yes, actually, I have..they give me a look like I'm crazy and say, "Well then, why would you go to state" and that's mostly people who have already gotten into Umich..quite an arrogant statement, if you ask me.
Plus, most don't know I'm applying to out of state schools as well..but that's besides the point.

But..pros
Can't deny
Spirt
Sports
Ann Arbor
And I adore winter..so weather/snow =)

Cons
That complex that some Wolverines have
Largee freshman classes

most great schools have arrogant students, arrogance drives success in many cases, even though i wish it werent the case

LaLaLa, I am not from Michigan. I did not visit Michigan until my 18th birthday. I am not even American (I grew up in the Middle East). Even so, to me, in-staters who chose to leave Michigan when they have the option of studying at the University of Michigan, are making a big mistake. It has nothing to do with arrogance. It is a question of value for money. Academically, Michigan is one of the top 15 universities in the US. As a college experience, thanks to its spirited and lively campus and the awesome town of Ann Arbor, Michigan provides undergrads with an incredible setting. In terms of cost, in-staters pay under $80,000 (including room and board and books) for a 4-year education to attend a university that would otherwise cost a student over $160,000 to attend.

Of course, should a student get a scholarship to attend an out of state university of equal calibre or should a student's family be very wealthy, leaving the state to attend another elite institution may be justified. But otherwise, I really cannot see the logic. And that has nothing to do with arrogance.

Wow, you guys have a t-shirt that says "Harvard of the West"? ... that's what I'd call inferiority complex.

Mine says "Michigan of the East" ... and that's a direct quote.

Yeah, you are probably right with the correct quote on that t-shirt.

Apparently, JFK called Michigan the "Harvard of the East" when he was unveiling his Peace Corps project on campus. Michigan's a great school but it's definitely a bit hyped up. Our football team is good but has been in decline for a while. Hopefully RR starts a new era. The only reason we're the "most winningest" team is that we're one of the few schools to have been playing prior to WWII.

A lot of International students, particularly Koreans, are obnoxious and cliquey as hell. There aren't really any fun and interesting classes to take here. Some in-state students say things like, "If I hadn't got into Michigan, I prob would have gone to Stanford, Yale, MIT, etc..." The school's academics are strong but not that strong.

Ann Arbor's got a decent variety of restaurants but the quality's kinda lacking, especially when it comes to international food. The weather's not too bad but the campus isn't that nice either.

"I want to express my thanks to you, as a graduate of the Michigan of the East, Harvard University. I come here tonight delighted to have the opportunity to say one or two words about this campaign..."
Remarks of Senator John F. Kennedy at the University of Michigan Student Union Building Steps in October 14, 1960

"The university is also recognized for its history of student activism... It was also the location chosen by President John F. Kennedy to propose the concept of what became the Peace Corps, and the site of Lyndon B. Johnson's speech outlining his Great Society program." (Wikipedia)

Alexandre..I havent even found out about the other out of state schools yet (I didn't apply ED) but its between UofM and MSU at this point. The MSU honors program and James Madison, and Lymann Briggs are very, very good..plus I already have some money to MSU..but some people here seem to think that if you're chosing between the two, then UofM is the only option.

Every school talks up their programs big time. Look at our business school. For me, U-M was my only option. If I applied to MSU, the only way I would have went is if they gave me boatloads of money or put me in that med school program had I wanted to be a doctor. I'm not going to be anyone's 'little brother.'

Don't forget about "The job seeks you" when referring to the Michigan Football position.

The overarching thought about UM being drastically better than MSU as a school just emphasizes the arrogance.

It is though. Its a FACT.

It depends on what you are looking for in a college..so what's a true fact for you might not be for somebody else
please just get over yourself

Perhaps you don't understand the meaning of fact. The sky is Blue. FACT. The grass is green. FACT. UM is better than MSU - FACT (unless you think that to some the sky isn't blue and the grass isn't green, in which case you're deluded).

MIT has a shirt that says "Harvard...'coz not everyone can get into MIT". Many other elite universities, including Chicago, Duke and Stanford, have such shirts. Like Michigan, those schools don't have an inferiority complex. It is just a silly shirt. Or as my friend Freud said it best, "sometimes, a shirt is just a shirt." Hehe!!!

Seriously, as GoBlue pointed out, in Michigan's case, it was an actual quote. One of Harvard's most famous alumns, JFK, first said it when visiting the University of Michigan back in 1960.
