George Washington University: Political Science vs. Political Communication

Currently was accepted to George Washington University, transferring in 60 credits and did an internship with a Congressman over the summer. I have my Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies and thought that was decent.

As for overall job prospects which major do you think would allow me more opportunities, the Political Science degree or Political Communication degree from George Washington University?

Not opposed to going to Law school afterwards but in the event I didn't want to go that direction.

The network of contacts you make through your internship and via attending GW will be far more important than any particular degree title. Pick the one you like best.

That aside if I had a gun to your head which would you say?

I’m not claiming to be an expert, however, I’d say in analyzing the title that political science sounds more versatile. Communication is a more specific part of the overarching study of political science. So I’d say political science is a safe bet. However, I 100% agree with MrMom62 up there. The fact that you interned with a congressman makes you a shoe-in either way. And if you find that political communication involves classes that peak your interest more, by all means, go for it. And hey, it is absolutely worth considering that if you like your classes more you are more likely to enjoy the rest of your college career and are also more likely to succeed. I’d prefer an enthusiastic political communications major to a bored political science major if I were an employer. Then again, I imagine the requirements for both degrees are quite similar. Anyway, just my thoughts.

I agree. Those contacts that he met will open up a lot of doors. The degrees tend to be almost identical so I just think that the above user should just pick the one that he wants.
